Default Help: I am fixing my brothers 05. which rear brakes do i have?

what i have learned at this point is that there is a regular system , and the J55HD system. only thing i can say is the cast number on the caliper is 3 K242-011C
and the pads are ridiculously small. this is your basic 05, auto.

is J55HD specific to the Z51 package? how do i know if car is J55. my brother doesn't know. yea he is a put gas in it and drive it type of guy, lol. if it needs repairs it typically goes to the dealer as i live 3 hours from him. i am gonna bring the pads to the parts store. i hope they can figure it out.

i tried the vin decoder, didn't tell me much

Does not matter all 05's take the same pad shape. The front is 731 and the rear is 732. If the rotors are drilled than its a Z51.

There should be a label on the inside of the glove box door.

This label will indicate options (by code number) and I believe the brakes have a code.

Else as above, if still OEM, base rotors are solid and Z51 option are drilled.

Drilled rotors are on more than just cars with the Z51 option. In 2005 there were 3.4% of the non-Z51 cars produced with optional J55 brakes. I'm amazed that the vendors who sell brakes don't know that.

The glovebox label code will be J55 for the larger drilled heavy duty brakes or JL9 for the smaller non-drilled brakes. At least that's what the car left the factory with and assuming the car has the original glovebox cover.

Replacement pads will be the same size for either rotor size.
