Default differential gear lash/help in san antonio with diff

i got a repplacement diff in today/// it supposedly has 101k on it..

i can change bearings and seals but im a little worried about the gear lash...on a new setup it is i think somewhere around .006 to .009 maybe,,,,but this guy im just guessing by feel is more like .015 to .025 .. the bearings are smooth and there is no slop in them at all...

opinions on if i need to just have a new ring and pinion installed...and is there anyone in the san antonio, austin, new braunfels etc etc area that someone can recomend with confidence of quality of work to do the rebuild... if its getting new gears then im having it completely rebuilt

or if theres an individual in my area i would gladly pay for your work of course

my gut says dont take a chance... rebuild it .but .i dont know chit about C6

thanks in advance,,,

You do know that it won't bolt up correct? You need to change the casting between the trans and diff for it to work. I also believe that 05 diff has an extra sensor on because GM changed computers in 2006.

Lots of good forum vendors that can rebuild it for you, RPM, Zip, RKT, etc.

one last question guys...

i actually checked the lash and its .015 ... the side bearing races have a strange striation pattern like there was one bad roller in the bearing...its still smooth..but the race one one side has discoloration strips... im going to take a chance...replace side bearings and put in the car... the new bearings might take up some of the excess lash..
i know i should not do but im gonna chance it..
thanks for the input

Not in TX so can't help with repair, but can tell you bearings alone won't correct lash adjustment. There may be shims on each side of bearing, and if there, you could add thickness to left hand side, and remove some from right hand side to decrease lash. Lash also affects gear tooth contact pattern, so make sure it stays towards the center of the ring gear teeth. Gears do wear, so it is possible that slight wear could have increased lash from OEM original build, as well as slight bearing wear.

You may be best getting it done at a vendor if no one local to you can assist.

peace of mind is priceless..........................

i was thinking the same you are...
and your right about peace of mind... im leaning more and more to buying all the tool and doing it as many times as it takes to learn it myself..in the end its just math.. if the tools equal even slightly less than a rebuild from a vendor ...im gonna break down and buy them..id rather spend the money on tools that i will always have ..

the biggest problem is the shims ..if i need different ones..they are rediculous expensive cuz the dealer here wont sell them separately...i checked..

Check with RPM transmissions or Hoosier Performance Engineering. Both are vendors here on the forum, at least at one time. Not sure about Hoosiers anymore.

Hoosier is the old DTE. I have a complete rebuild DTE differential.

They specialize in Corvette differentials.

I understand the tools needed to rebuild the diff for the Vette runs around $30,000.

Your run of the mill diff repair shop will not be able to do this without the special tools.

I had the same issue. Bought all the tools at a closed Chevy dealer auction in 2009, but the shims were so expensive that I traded the tools to get the diff built.

I am not sure just what tools are required for setting up the differential.

I have just read that the Corvette uses special ones only used on the Vettes

So not commonly found in most shops.
