The dreaded balancer wobble
I recently purchased an 05 z51 base left work the other day and had the belt squeak stopped at the dealer I bought it from on my way home and upon inspection my belt had jumped 2 ribs off the pulley. I left the car with the dealer and got a call this morning saying the balancer was bad and it had cracked my timing cover as well. After reading through threads the balancer seems to be a common problem but I haven't seen anything about it cracking timing cover. Should I be concerned about the well being of my crank if it was that loose? It is covered under warranty at this point

My guess is the balancer just came apart enough at the insulator for the outer ring to contact the cover. Don't let them put another GM balancer on! Get a PowerBond or an ATI balancer.

Is this still a problem if you pin it for a supercharger? That is in my near future plan so if I don't have to waste money on a pulley that will be rendered useless by next winter I'd like to avoid it

No, A&A V-3 Si kit with 6 rib ATI HB.
When you start to pulley down and spin the S/C faster an 8 rib is recommended for improved belt wrap.
Since the OP plans on S/C in the future, definitely pin the HB, preferably an ATI, definitely not oem! Ask me how I know

its still going to be a problem with the stock balancer pinned.the problem is the elastomer between the inner and outer hub of the hb fails.

Cool thanks guys! Got it back today they ate the 1200$ I only had to pay the 70$ in belts since they're A wear item. I'll def look into an ati since I plan to cam it at the same time of the a&ha kit it's all gotta come back off

Dang...should have brought it to get the cam done now and put that loot toward the cam install. That would have covered the balancer and a good portion of cam labor.

Same thing just happened to me. Bought an 07 Z51. Day before I bought it no noise. Drove it home the next day and the belt was sqeaking. Called the dealer and took it back. They changed the balancer, bolt, and both belts for free. Even put me in a rental for 2 days.

Wow how did they do that out of warranty?

The ink was still wet on my paperwork when I called them back and told them about it. I was worried they would tell me to get bent, but they stepped up and took care of it. The dealer just paid themselves for the work, GM didn't pay for it. They knew I was shopping a few different cars, probably just wanted to make sure I didn't bring the car back and stop payment on the check.

Just an FYI....I wouldnt let the dealership touch your car. Read the many a thread on here about dealership issues. I think there were even a few on replacing the pulley. I know you were probably in a jam and needed the car, but just for future reference, either do the work yourself or find a Vette mechanic close by. You may pay the same, but your car wont come back worse than it was
