Default GM Claims 512 HP Z06 to the Europeans

Press Release

The new Cadillac BLS and Corvette Z06 on the Budapest Motor Show

After the world premier on the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), Automobil 2005 in Budapest is the first international motor show, where the general public can meet the production version of the new Cadillac BLS. The car that arrives to the premium mid-size sedan segment is the first Cadillac model to be built in Europe.

The BLS will be featured on the motor show with the 1.9L (150 hp) turbodiesel engine version, but the three other gasoline engine versions (2.0L four cylinder turbo with 175 and 210 hp, 2.8L V6 turbo with 255 hp) will be available at launch. The BLS offers five- or six-speed manual transmissions and five- or six-speed automatic transmissions, depending on engine type.

The standard equipment of the BLS will be rich as on other Cadillac models and optional luxury features can also be chosen, such as the quality leather interior, bi-xenon jewel like headlamps, DVD based navigation and Bose audio system.

Besides the BLS other Cadillac models will be present at the auto show, including the CTS and STS sedans, the SRX crossover vehicle and the XLR roadster.

The Corvette range also receives a new model by the end of the year with the arrival of the new Z06, which will complete the range that also includes the Corvette Coupe and the Convertible versions. The 404 hp output of the 6 liter V8 engine used in the sixth generation Corvette already provides good performance, but the Z06 inherited the genes of the 4 times Le Mans winner C6.R racecar. Thanks to this, the car features racing technology, while the vehicle’s engine capacity was increased to 7 liters generating 512 hp in the extremely light super-sportscar.

The Cadillac and Corvette novelties can be seen during Automobil 2005 in Pavilon A, on Stand 107.

Corvette Z06: the fastest, most powerful Corvette ever

FRANKFURT - The Corvette Z06 is the fastest, most powerful production Corvette ever built as well as the fastest, most powerful production car ever offered by General Motors. Its LS7 V8 engine achieves 512 horsepower (377 kW) at 6300 rpm, delivering the 1423 kg Z06 a 0-100 km/h performance of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 319 km/h.

The Z06 model is a Corvette for the extreme performance enthusiast, combining the numerous attributes of the sixth-generation Corvette with the technology and winning determination from the Corvette racing program to take the Z06 to the next level in total performance. It is the fastest, most powerful car ever offered by General Motors.

“The Z06 is the dividend from competing so successfully in endurance racing,” said Dave Hill, Corvette’s chief engineer. “It combines the strong attributes of the sixth-generation Corvette with the spirit, technology and know-how from the race program to form an American supercar with outstanding credentials.”

The Corvette racing program has been a story of domination. In the 2004 season, the Corvette C5-R racing team won every race they started, wrapping up the most successful era in Corvette’s 50-year racing history. In its five years, the C5-R racing program took 35 victories in 55 races, four American Le Mans Series championships and three double victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Corvette Racing made history at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, scoring its fourth 1-2 finish in the GT1 class in five years time with the new Corvette C6.R.

that's metric hp, or ps.

512ps = 505hp (SAE) = 377kW

Maybe, but GM's official Press release would seem to be at odds with your eval:

Corvette model range gets 511 bhp strong Z06

Fastest Corvette ever hits Europe in December

Breukelen - In December the all new hand built Corvette Z06 hits the European showroom floors. That is a new stage in the development of the American brand in our part of the world. The Z06 is the fastest and strongest (511 hp) Corvette ever and was literally developed alongside the C6.R racing car that won the Le Mans 24 hours this year. The production version showed its breeding in a recent test on the extremely demanding Nürburgring racing circuit, where the Z06 clocked an incredibly fast lap time of 7 minutes and 43 seconds. That would be an impressive result even for the exotic specially tuned cars that are often seen at ‘The Ring ‘ and the result is no less than unique when you look at the standard trim and price level of the Z06. That price has been set at 79.950 euros (price in Germany).

Thanks to its close technical relationship to the C6.R racing car the new Corvette Z06 production version can easily compete with even the most exotic of supersportscars from Italy. It achieves a top speed of 319 kilometers per hour and an ‘asphalt rippling’ 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 3, 9 seconds.

Twin brother
The new Corvette Z06 – in the showrooms from December – and the Corvette C6.R that took first place in its class this year years Le Mans 24 hours race are twin brothers in many respects, chief engineer David C. Hill explains. They were developed literally alongside each other. ,,That means both cars have similar engines, power trains, dry-sump oil-distribution systems and similar lightweight titanium and carbon-fiber components.”

Le Mans
The tech transfer went both ways, he explains:,, There can be no doubt that the people that created these cars learned from each other.”
In other words: the race car looks like the production version and owners know that the car that won Le Mans 2005 is very much based on the car in their driveway. To name just one example: flared carbon-fiber fender flares help accommodate the massive wheels and tires. The P325/30/ZR-19 Eagle F1 Super car rear tires are, by the way, the biggest ever on a Corvette. They can withstand speeds of up to 330.

Lightweight
Another record is set by the 7.0 liter V8 engine. Hand built and blueprinted like in the racing car. It is the strongest ever built by Corvette or GM for a production car: 511 hp (376kW) at 6.300 rpm and 634 Nm at 4800 rpm. It features a high 7.000 rpm redline, made possible by optimizing flow in the intake and exhaust tracks and intake valves and connecting rods made out of high-strength lightweight titanium. Racing technology. The same goes for the dry-sump oil system that guarantees optimum lubrication even under extreme acceleration, braking and cornering made possible by the Z06. And lightweight ultra stiff constructions like the floorboards mad out of a carbon fiber and balsa wood composite.

Guzzler tax
The Z06 is equipped with a specially tuned chassis and brakes to match the 319 km/h top speed. Brakes get drilled rotors and are equipped with six-piston front callipers and four-pistons rear to perfectly control the enormous forces. The very efficient Corvette Z06 is not only extremely fast, but also uses fuel sparingly. That is underlined by the fact that American Z06 buyers will not have to pay any ‘Guzzler Tax’. While almost all other cars in its class - and certainly Italian brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati - do.

Orders
The new Corvette Z06 is available in Europe starting December for a price of 79.950 euros (price in Germany). There is a choice of six exterior colours – Le Mans Blue Metallic, Black, Velocity Yellow, Machine Silver metallic, Daytona Sunset Orange Metallic en Victory Red. The Ebony interior can be combined with red or titanium accents. The Z06 is a true super sports car, it’s standard equipment is rich. Only polished wheels and an integrated DVD navigation system with voice recognition technology and a Bose premium 7-speaker sound system are available as options. Cadillac & Corvette Europe already received 150 orders for the Z06, although European customers were not able to drive the car yet.

Maybe this was prior to the SAE rating, since the Kw number is one Kw lower.

SAE-certified horsepower
In 2005, the Society of Automotive Engineers introduced a new test procedure (J2723) for engine horsepower and torque. The procedure eliminates some of the areas of flexibility in power measurement, and requires an independent observer present when engines are measured. The test is voluntary, but engines completing it can be advertised as "SAE-certified".

Many manufacturers began switching to the new rating immediately, often with surprising results. The rated output of Cadillac's Northstar V8 jumped from 440 hp (328 kW) to 469 hp (350 kW) under the new tests, while the rating for Toyota's Camry 3.0 L 1MZ-FE V6 fell from 210 hp (157 kW) to 190 hp (142 kW). The first engine certified under the new program was the 7.0 L LS7 used in the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Certified power rose slightly from 500 hp (373 kW) to 505 hp (377 kW).

Drawbar horsepower (dbhp)

From the above article. Interesting on SAE horsepower

Yup, that's the gist of it, I think.

From an old C&D, the Deutsche norm corrects to 68 degrees F and 30.0 inches of Mercury. The SAE standard before the current one (most likely the same?) corrects to 77 degrees, 29.3 inches.

There is also a widespead belief that their fuels are more advanced, cleaner, and better burning. (Certainly true of their diesel.) Though don't strictly go by octane ratings. 98 over there is like our 93.

Default DIN Hp vs. SAE hp

One SAE horse is the ability to lift 33,000 lbs one foot in one minute. One DIN horse is the ability to lift 450000 kg one cm in one minute. For the same power the SAE measurement is thus 98.629% of the metric DIN measurement.

DIN is the standard used in Europe

505 SAE hp = 512 DIN hp
