Does anyone know what the 12th digit means in the GM 2006 Corvette Z06 VIN #s?
From what I’ve seen for 2006 C6 and Z06 production cars they all have 1 in the 12th digit. Under VIN standards for North America this digit is normally reserved for the most significant decimal of the sequential serial number. If I had to guess I’d say 1 = production and 0 = pre-production.

The 12th digit is a sequence number - 65100300 would be a Z06 and 65600300 is a XLR - the sequence digit is used when different models are built on the same line.

Here's the break down of any VIN used in the US market for any motor vehicle:
Each VIN needs to be 17 digits. No two vehicles can have the same VIN within 30-years.
Section 1 of the VIN contains 3 letters or numbers. The first three digits is the WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier). This is a three digit value assigned by the SAE to any manufacturer. The first digit tells you the county. For instance, China is "L", Taiwan in "R", the USA is "5", and so on.
Section 2 of the VIN contains 5 letters or numbers. The manufacturer can assign whatever value they want to these five positions and informs the DOT and EPA what the digits means. Here's an example I use:
4th digit > H = Hardtail, C = Chopper, S = Scooter
5th digit > Body type: B = Base, C = Custom
6th digit > Engine type: 1 = Single Cylinder, 2 = Twin Cylinder
7th and 8th digit > Horsepower: 50 = 4.9 HP, 05 = 12 HP
Section 3 of the VIN is just the 9th place which is a check digit. There is a very complicated formula for calculating this digit. It allows a computer to read a 17 digit VIN and make sure that it is a legal or real VIN. If the check digit was just made up by some chop shop guy, the computer would kick it out and say that the math didn't work. If you want to see the formula go to the DOT, NHTSA, or SAE sites.
Section 4 of the VIN is one digit that tells the year of the vehicle. 1999 = X, 2000 = Y, 2001 = 1, 2002 = 2, ... 2006 = 6, etc...
Section 5 of the VIN is one digit that tells the plant name and location. The manufacturer tells the DOT what each letter or number stands for. As an example, X = Shanghai, China or something like that.
Section 6 of the VIN is the last 6 digits of the VIN. This is the sequential production numbers. Example: 000001, 000002, 000003, etc. If the manufacturer makes less than 500 units per year, they use the last two digits of the WMI as the first two locations of Section 6. Example: AW0001, AW0002, etc...
So I would assume that Section 2 is how you tell if the car is a Z06. There may be no way of telling which Z06 you have because GM most likely just filed the DOT paperwork to make the Z06 a sub-model designated in Section 2 of the VIN.

That makes sense, and here is an example;
Vehicle:2006 XLR
Selected Style:XLR
VIN:1G6YV36A965601394
So the C6 and Z06 get 1 in the 12th digit and the XLRs 6.
