Default LS7 + GM Stage 3 "Hot Cam" = 600HP

Hope this isn't a repost.

Saw it on ls1gto.com from a Hot Rod article.

Hot Rod Magazine, with the help of GM and Katech, tests a few different cams in an LS7 and makes 600 SAE brake horsepower with a new Stage 3 "Hot Cam" GM developed for the engine in the latest issue of the magazine. There's also some interesting stuff about a composite carb manifold GM made for the engine.

600 hp from just a GM-spec'd cam swap. Imagine what this thing is going to do once the aftermarket fully gets ahold of it. Once the head and cam gurus, among others, spend some time with this engine I don't see 700 N/A HP at around 8000 RPM being out of the question. The ZO6 guys have gotta be loving this.

I wonder if it would still be under warranty if you use the GM cam.

The cam would not be! Everything else would be covered unless they can prove (or feel) what broke was directly related to the cam or installation work.

Is the cam an engineering prototype or is it (or will it soon be) available from GM?

GM offers their hot cams for all previous engines in their high performance catalog. it was just a matter of time before they made some for the LS7

Would you have more of a warranty left if you got the hotcam installed instead of say an LG cam? Or does it not make a difference?

If the above is yes would you have to have a dealer install it?

I'm getting my car mid February but will order that cam today if you can hold more of a warranty.

And was it really just a cam swap...no headers or anything? 100hp seems a lot from a cam swap alone.

Installing a GM "Hot" cam or any other cam for that matter, VOIDS the engine warranty. The increase in HP & Torque can be directly applied by the Dealer/Chevy/GM to the rest of the Power Train, as a causal effect, and it VOIDS the warranty on the Clutch, Tranny & Diff. as well.

Most Chevy Dealers will NOT install a higher lift cam in a car, even if you supply it due to emissions compliance.

Most GM "Hot" cams are specifically listed as "Off Road use only".

8000 revs is a pipe dream. That equates to a mean piston speed of 5360 FPM, which is F1 territory.

3.25" stroke NASCAR unrestricted engines are running 5145 FPM at 9500 revs.

"SAE horsepower" doesnt mean jack. It's either SAE gross or SAE net. It's probably SAE gross, but did they even say?

A vintage correct L-88 with massaged heads and race headers/exhaust will make about 560 SAE gross @ 6400. With the best modern available components a Mark IV 427 make well over 600 SAE gross, but it's nowhere near streetable, and I doubt if the cam tested on the LS7 is, either, not even considering emission issues.

Default Magazine Update!!!

I just saw the LS7 Hot Rod article at the bookstore and here are the
stats from my memory.

Brand New Crate Motor SAE HP w/ 17" long headers into 2.5" collector:
519Hp @ 6374 rpms.
Stage 2 Hot Cam w/ same headers. This appears to be a slip in cam:
554Hp @ 6374 rpms.
Stage 3 Hot Cam .630 lift on both exhaust and intake w/ different valve springs(of course). 26" long headers into 2.5" collector:
600Hp @ 6800rpms(not sure the exact)

!!!!Both of these cams will be available shortly from GMPP!!!!!

There was also a test of the stock motor without cats and mufflers, but with stock manifolds. 522hp.

All numbers are SAE, not STP. Prety impressive.

Not sure if the tests with the headers were run with cats and mufflers.

Keep in mind all of these numbers are from memory.

\[QUOTE]

So a production engine without the vehicle exhaust system makes more power than the than the modified engines, eh?

Are they talking about offering these to the public?

Would you just buy these and have someone like Lou put it in?

My assumption after a quick scan of the mag at the bookstore was that the tests with the headers were run with cats and mufflers.
The 522 hp number was run without cats or mufflers but stock manifolds. I am not sure why they did this. Maybe they were trying to see what a completley stock motor "uncorked" would run.
I think the STP number was over 550hp, but SAE corrected it was 522hp.

I would also guess that once this engine got broken in there would be a few additional hp.

They also said that the 600hp number would have been closer to 630hp if not corrected.

Default Oops!

Oops!
I messed up and have changed my post.
Stock motor without cats and mufflers was 522hp, not 622hp.
