[Z06] 07 ZO6 Oil Leak
#23
Intermediate
My 2005 C6 is at the dealership right now getting the oil pan gasket replaced.
Fortunately, I have the extended 7 year warranty that leaves me with a $200 deductible.
I still think they will try to nickle and dime me before getting to the porosity issue.

My 08 is now in a local Tampa dealership were my oil pan is leaking. It's a ZO6. It's also getting a new harmonic balancer. Once in a while I would get a lean code and service traction control. When they diagnosed it, they said it was due to my Callaway honker. Warranty would not cover the new update reflash since after market air intake.

I have an 07 with 16k miles. If I let it sit for long enough, a small puddle of oil will appear on my epoxy garage floor. It has to be for one month or more.
As long as I drive it once a week or more, this doesn't happen.
I assume that it takes a really long time for every last drop of oil to drain into the pan and when it does something leaks. Either that or it's just a porosity of the oil pan.
Seemed to help when I switched from 5w30 to 5w40, but that really should be the same thickness cold.
I have been under the car and the only thing wet was the oil pan bolts, which I re-torqued to spec. Some seemed loose. I also tightened the dry sump lines.

I got the car back today, it was to dark to see the bottom of the pan to make sure everything is ok. They also replaced the harmonic balancer, upon inspecting the engine bay I notice right in front of the harmonic balancer, the cooling fins to the power steering ( not sure ) the fins from the center is all warped. Called the service manager nd they will replace it.
They also replaced the fob because when I hit option on the dash, it says option not available. The new fob still gives me the same message.
The car is on a stock tune, my check engine light is flickering and also service traction control.

Was just searching the forum since I am having a small oil leak and it is hard to find. I have a 2006 z06 that is way out of warranty. I wiped everything down and it looks like I have a couple bolts that are "weeping" oil. Does anyone know the fix for this? Is this covered under the TSP?
I am thinking I have to drop the pan and put a new gasket but not sure...any help would be great.

Whoops!...I meant TSB- the tech service bulletin that referenced the porous block. Yeah, I understand but I am so leary of mechanics these days.
I just went to a vette specialist in my area for SS brake lines since I didn't have time to do them myself. Well, they never checked for leaks after the install. I pulled the car out of my garage for the first time after the install, I had a puddle of brake fluid under my passenger front tire. Could have been a disaster if I didn't notice it as I shut my garage door. The good news is that I went to a local auto parts store, bought and replaced the crush washers and re-torqued, bled the lines....all good. Still a PITA, though.
The pan gasket does look like tough to get to...that's why I was searching the forum and found this thread...confirmed what I thought about getting the pan off. There is a large vette dealer about 50 miles away...I guess I could try them.
Thanks for your help!

There have been several threads over the years about a small, drop-drop, oil leak at the rear of the pan in this forum. The consensus has been that a Z that sits for extended periods of time is the commonality and once the Z is up and being driven, you do not experience this. I would not worry about it until it became a leak that showed after just sitting in the garage after driving it, not after sitting for several weeks/months.

If you have any weeping I wouldn't worry about it. The cost of fixing a small oil leak isn't worth the little bit of oil you would save by having it fixed. So you leave a drop of oil on the garage floor overnight? Put a pan under the car and you can clean the pan every couple of months.
As for places to look for leaks you can also look at the main bearing bolts that are just above the oil pan. Sometimes the leaks can come from them and tightening them can stop the leak. The front cover gasket can also leak and you should keep an eye on it since it could grow into a massive oil leak that bathes the entire bottom of the car in oil and when the car is stopped a considerable amount of oil drips on the floor within a few minutes. Had this happen with my 08Z. Pulled out of the garage to run 5 or 6 laps and when I came back my buddy stopped me before I pulled into the garage and said you have a problem. There was so much oil on the bottom of the car the mechanic couldn't figure out where it was coming from, basically the bottom of the car was covered in oil from the front stabilizer bar all the way to the rear fascia. First they replaced the oil cooler line, then the pan gasket and checked the main bearing bolts and finally the front cover gasket was replaced and the problem was resolved.
