Shifting Question - Anyone Accidentally Catch Reverse?
Has anyone accidentally gone from 4th to reverse instead of to 5th? It sure looks like if you slide the shifter over just a bit too far on the 4th-to-5th shift, you're in trouble. Will the transmission go into reverse if you make this error while the car is rolling forward at 4th gear speeds? Seems like it would have been better to put reverse next to 1st gear or 6th gear - that way you would have to mess up a straight pull/push shift maneuver in order to accidentally catch reverse (assuming you're taking the gears in order). Thx.

you can't shift into reverse over 3 miles an hour it has a solenoid lockout. Although I did have to replace mine once on 03 model same as today. Check your tranny after you shut car off and see that in a few seconds you cannot go into reverse, then you know the solenoid is doing it's job because there is no ac to it/

They also gave you a manual release for the doors in the cockpit, just in case the electrical system takes dump!!!

What year is your car?
On my 06' I had a selenoid go bad and when shifting to 5th (about 160mph or so) the car would "feel" like it was going to hit reverse...but it would still be going in fifth...it would just open up a lot further to the right than normal.
The cars I was passing did notice my reverse light coming on.
Further, once your selenoid goes out, the light would even come on going from top of 2nd into third...it was weird. The shifter would feel really bad altogether as it seemed everything slid about 1-2 inches to the right...it is very hard to describe...

yes you can push through the reverse lockout and it will destroy the reverse syncro and gind. actually very easy to do only about 10 lbs to do so. dealer will cover under war. once you push through the lock out it will remain inoperative until fixed

If you shift at 6,800 rpms, once you drop to 2nd gear (or whatever gear you are shifting to) you will be at lower rpm's as well. THAT is the main difference between hp. Depending on what gear (let's take for example 1st to 2nd gear), shifting early will yield a loss of apx 25-30 hp...once you shift to 3rd gear, you are already carrying that much less power...it just keeps getting worse and worse...make sense?
While you may de dropping 1-5 hp on the top, you are gaining much much more on the next gear if you hold high rpms...

Leading cause of reverse gear grind. If your tranny blows reverse it's faulty parts or that. Reverse lock-out is supposed to stop it. Although the dealer tells me it's semi-common.

My selenoids on my 06 went out twice. They later found there to be a defect on some of the synchros on the early 06's which they updated with a new part. When they rebuilt my tranny, they replaced that part and it seemed to be ok for a while. When I traded the 06, the problem seemed to be coming back again though...

I've seen a few cars at the track have the reverse lights come on briefly during a quick shift. Not good!!
Quite honestly though, that's a big miss though.

Shootout in Sweden
About a year ago, a Z06 owner in Sweden was invited to a shootout at an airfield. He reported losing to another car, Porsche I believe, due to a shift from 4th to 5th at about 155 mph. I think it was on the BMW M5 board. The camera is in the Porsche and they all of a sudden pull way ahead of the vette. He missed the shift, went toward reverse and I believe he said it made the grinding sound. Wasn't good.

I was referring to 1/4 mile racing, but I guess it can happen anywhere!
