[Z06] Optima battery ?

Red is the correct battery. Although some are running the yellow optimas, they are the wrong application and will fail. The yellow battery is a deep discharge marine type battery that is made to discharge fully before recharging. In a marine application, the generator of a marine vessel kicks on when the battery reaches a certain discharge level and recharges the battery fully. For everday use with constant charging, the yellow will not last. Those who are running them, take them back to Costco and exchange it for the correct one.

- Yellow top is for automotive use
- Red top is for automotive use
- Blue top is for marine (boat) use

Red Top
My experience for two of these in my 2001 Z06 is that they are only good for two years, maximum. After this they will not hold a charge for more than a week. It may not all be the battery's fault as the electronics inherent in the Corvette has some parasitic draw, I am sure. But under normal conditions they do not hold up.

I agree about the above comment. As an alternative, you may want to look into an Odyssey, which seems more durable (PC1200MJT). I use it in my Z and it seems to be a higher quality battery.

Optima does not list a model of the Red top for the Corvette. Which one do you purchase. It seems every time some one asks this there is no reply. Costco does not seem to know probably because it is not listed for a Corvette.

The above information is completely incorrect. Here's what the colors mean:
- Yellow top is for automotive use
- Red top is for automotive use
- Blue top is for marine (boat) use

It's a model 12853 (75/35) red top. It is not listed for the vette. But it fits fine and works great. And you can put a battery tender on it without a problem. Mine is routed out the back above the license plate.

I replaced my stock battery with Odyssey PC1200, which was recommended by the factory rep. The PC 1200 MJT is metal jacketed to withstand high heat. The rep said if the battery is not mounted in the engine bay, the metal jacket is unnecessary.
The Odyssey is smaller than stock, and I assume, lighter. Fits in the box easily, cables and battery holder mount right up with no problems.

After the Corvette Forum came into existence in 1999 I started reading about the leaky Delco batteries in the C5's, so I purchased a Red Top for my early 98 and replaced the delco, being proactive. I traded the 98 last July for a 09 Z06 and the Red Top was as strong as ever. 8+ years in my C5, so I have no doubt's about using a Red Top in my 06Z when it's time to replace the OEM Delco.
No problems with battery in my Z so I haven't needed to replace it, yet.

Blue by U: To my knowledge, the metal jacket is integrated with the construction of the MJT Odyssey battery, i.e. not removable. I hook up my battery tender under the hood, rather than directly to the battery.
Also, the literature that came with the battery indicated that a low power, 2 amp charger (battery tender) will keep the battery fully charged if there are electrical loads during storage, provided the battery was not fully discharged. The manual also says if a standard automotive charger is used to recharge a discharged battery, it is important to make sure the charging voltage does not to exceed 15 volts during charge.
