Default First gear rattle

I have a rattle kinda sounds like marbles in a muffled can and it only occurs in 1st gear from dead stop. Sounds like it's underneat in drive shaft/trany area and it goes away after I'm up to 10mph or so, it's a 08 Z with only 6K miles 98% of them being granny miles. I've had this for quite awhile now, I just hate taking it to Goverment Motors.
Anyone have/had anything like this with their Z?
thanks

I would go to the dealership ASAP (Before they shut them down) and see what their tranny mechanic thinks.

It doesn't sound like it's a problem to me, however, I can't actually "hear" the noise you're describing!

As luck would have it, the noise you hear is known as "marbles in a can," familiar to all since the C5 came on line. If you try to hold your rpm higher (around 1000) when starting from a stop, it will not be as loud. Perfectly normal.

I agree with allanlaw.

Marbles-in-a-can is characteristic of C5/C6 Corvettes. Nothing to be concerned about. It derives from the dual-mass flywheel design that helps handle the power of the motor while retaining easy drivability.

Driver can minimize or eliminate the offending noise by engaging the clutch at say 1200 rpm instead of idle when taking off from a dead stop.

Yup. Mine does the same thing. Just take off with a bit higher RPMs...

They all have it - as others have said, just put your foot in it a little harder from a stop. @Over 1200 RPM launching, you don't hear that anymore.

I used to get rid of it by just giving a little rev before i took off... not from just a dead idle.

Love this forum, thanks for replies. I'll rev her up a bit from dead stop.

Thank god I found this thread. I'd been searching for 3 days cause that marbles in a can crap bothers the hell out of me. I drove around my neighborhood for an hour last night, stopping and going trying to pinpoint that damn noise.

This is my first vette and first drive by wire vehicle so I had been leaving real low in the RPM band, glad to hear it's perfectly normal. Thanks guys!

Very informative thread. I had it on my 2002 Camaro SS as well.

This is a reason I love CF. I've had all kinds of little "normal" stuff. I used to freak out a bit. Now I just search the forum and 99 times out of 100 it's nothing. The folks here (particularly some of the most prolific posters) have saved me a lot of time and heartache...

I came here to say what Big Turkey and Lucky13 already have said! Thanks for clearing this up. More RPMs before shifting... not a problem!

Does anyone have this in more than just first gear? My 06 does this at low rpm's in 1st , 2nd and 3rd. The original owner said its done this since 0 miles. If I drive the car much more aggressive i can elliminate the noise. It drives me crazy in town when going light to light.

I've got an '11 GS, and when I take off and shift at low rpms and I can hear it in 1st, 2nd, and very slightly in 3rd. My '11 Camaro SS I traded for my vette made the same noise. I always have my mild to wild switch working so I don't really hear it too much. Its just annoying because it doesn't sound right.

Logg and KKJ – if you do decide to go to the dealership, be sure to keep me updated on your situation. I’d like to make sure it’s taken care of.

Thanks,

Mine '07 absolutely does this. I hate it, and am taking it to the dealer this week to drop off. Hopefully we can get it figured out.

The car is unsafe and you should drop it off at my house for purely safety reasons.

Just shift a few hundred RPM higher. It will likely go away.

Ron
