LOW oil pressure
hello everyone, i am a bit nervous, i got on my car afew times yesterday and the "low oil pressure" light popped on. There is absolutely no noise, the oil was just changed and i just changed the sensor this morning. Any ideas??? cold it is around 20-30 and warm it drops quite a bit down to around 8lbs!

Much the same as yourself, I had taken the engine to around 5k on a short straight ,and was coasting back down when the low oil pressure alarm sounded.
I stopped and checked the oil level and looked for any obvious signs of a malfunction - all seemed OK
I restarted the engine and the oil pressure at tickover was less than 10psi.
When I revved the engine the oil pressure rose to around 25psi.
The engine sounded just fine - no 'knocking' noises, or the like - very strange
Couldn't fathom it - I called the dealership and had the car uplifted.
They later told me the bearings had gone and the engine was replaced under GM warranty, at 9200 miles

Anything below ~25 psi at idle or 40 psi at cruise would make me nervous. What is the oil temperature? If it's not high, I'd suspect the gauge.
At work we were taught not to shut an engine down because of one bad indication. We used the term "triangle of agreement" to decide if there was indeed a problem. i.e. low oil pressure + high oil temp = a real problem.
OTOH, the car is on the ground so why wait?

Did you change your oil? or did someone else like the dealer change it?...Did you check the oil? Could possibly be very low, maybe the correct amount was not put in?

Get thee to a dealer ASAP! Even if it is only low oil or a bad sensor or wrong viscosity, if it really did drop to 8 psi, you may have bearing or some other internal damage. Either way, I'd want it checked out right away.

Now that you have put in 10w60 you need to be a bit more careful with high rpms and below normal operating oil temperature. 10w60 will not lubricate as well when cold.

Actually Im going to APS Kit and Im having forged engine 9.23 now ... no cold weather since the coldest weather in the middle east is about 15c ...

well i did some more diagnosing and found out that the head gasket blew, hance why i have water like oil, and the oil temp was always cool on the dic. So i guess i have a 4-6 hour job ahead of me and we will be all good.

I hope you are right but I bet you have bigger problems than just a head gasket if you only had 8 psi oil. The engine bearings cannot live on such low oil pressure. Sounds like it is time to send it to Katech!

I always wondered why people put in thicker oil to gain higher pressures. It might make you feel better, but it's not helping the problem, in fact it's doing the opposite. The oil pressure reading is a simple indicator for you to meter that the oil is flowing properly. If you use a heavier weight oil, the pressure wll increase but the flow will remain the same, or decrease. Addressing a low oil pressure problem with thicker oil doesn't fix the core issue, it only tricks the measuring device.

What is the average pressure readings that people see out there. I have seen some Zs with 60+ at idle on a cold start up, which rises to 100 at 4000 RPM when cold, when hot, I see them drop to around 45 @ idle and still rises to above 75 when runing a dyno test. I have seen others that start up and idle at 50 when cold, go to 75 when buzzed to arond 4k then at hot idle drop to around 35 or 40 and at 4k the pressure only rises to 60 or so. I have seen several like this with less than 10k on the clock and on the flip side I see many that will nearly peg the pressure gauge on a WOT dyno run after its hot. Seems like a lot of variance bettween the cars.

On my 2008, the oil pressure is usually 32 at idle, and 50 under normal driving. But the tick tick tick I hear coming from under the hood, and the puff puff from the exhaust, has never sounded right to me. I even took it to the dealer over the ticking, puff sound, and rough idle...they said all is well. Those sounds, and the shake, still drive me nuts...
