Default Katech HIgh Capacity LS7 oil pumps now CNC ported

I thought you guys might like to see some pictures of the inside of our ported LS7 oil pump. We are now CNC porting rather than bridgeport mill porting. Here are some pictures of the porting process done to the scavenge section.

ok for slow people like me, can you tell us what are the main benefits?

Also, we have 4 of my friends cars currently and during the past 2months that blew their motors out of dead LS7 oil pumps, do you find those reliable?

The primary purpose is to increase the ability of the pump to move oil from the pan to the tank. It is also blueprinted and hand assembled for more exacting tolerances and the pressure relief valve bore is honed to prevent sticking.

It doesn't matter how good your oil pump is if your pickup tube is not submerged in oil it is not pumping oil to the tank. At that point you have until the tank empties before you start to lose oil pressure. If your buddies starved their engines due to cornering loads then they need to upgrade the dry sump system. If your buddies blew the engines simply from oil pump failure I would be interested to know the root cause of failure.

And this is the reason I have this pump on order. My car starting experiencing low oil pressure over the last couple of weeks (max 49 psi and dropped to as low as 8-9 psi at idle). I searched this forum for details, but did not find the following on here, so I will post it for benefit of others. Keep a very close eye on those oil pressure gauges! I will also be upgrading the tank at some point, but this pump will alleviate the immediate concern:

This PI was superseded to update models and to clarify that the PI is referring to the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump. Please discard PIP4158A.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:

Some customers may complain of low oil pressure, no oil pressure , and/or engine noise. This may be the result of a sticking oil pump pressure relief valve. In some instances, the customer may experience this intermittently if the valve frees up when the engine cools down.

Recommendation/Instructions:
If the SI diagnosis isolates low mechanical oil pressure, replace the oil pump, flush the oil cooler lines (if equipped), clean the inside of the oil pan, change the oil and filter, and re-evaluate the concern.

Notice: If an engine noise is noticed after replacing the oil pump, follow the SI diagnosis and repair the engine as necessary.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Jason,

the most recent three:

1- drove the car in 3rd to 7000rpms, let off, got a check engine light (low oil pressure) CONTINUED DRIVING with zero oil pressure for 10mins (dont ask me why), and his bearings were toast, had to rebuild the engine. Stock minus a tune.

2- aggressively driven Z06 (no track driven just street), stock minus a K&N aircleaner and a tune. Came to realize his engine is toast after noticing lower than usual oil pressure dips, tried changing oil/filter etc... Took it to the dealer, switched the oil pump with no luck, so its getting a new LS7

3- another aggressively driven Z06 (street), almost same problem as no.2, started hearing weird drivetrain noises accompanied with a "low oil pressure" CEL, turned off the car, and towed to the garage, still trying to figure out the problem. This car as a vararam, LGX3, LG offroad x-pipe, tune.

A friends engine builder (in the states) uses some double oil-pump set-up that fits on the LS7 and to be honest it looks like a good peice, the car will be running in a weeks time and I can report back.

Pump arrived this morning. Thanks for expediting, Jason. I hope this is the problem. #2 and #3 above sound eerily familiar, although my CEL is random misfire from the cam, I believe (I hope). My drivetrain noises were from loose bolts in the Elite tunnel plate (fixed now). Motor wasn't making any unusual noises, so I am praying that this low pressure incident didn't cause any serious damage.

Jason, This is alittle off topic but I've been hearing a whirling sound( almost like howling wind) coming from my car when I accelerate between 1500-2300 RPMs. I think it coming from the rear but am not sure. What do you think it could be? You think its actually coming from the motor? The cars drives fine, but that sound has me worried.
