Default 07 ZO6 Air Filter Dyno results

Ok, Kudos to Jeremy F.for recommending Proven Power to me to have the dyno done on the air filters. James and Eric were extemely efficient and professional in everything they did. Anyway, I was impressed with what the ZR1 filter did and if you want a reuseable the TKO is great also.

Ok's here's the info. Dyno model - 224xlc

What was tested:
Drop in OEM ZO6 filter
Drop in OEM ZR1 filter
TKO drop in Blue Attack reuseable filter

Vechicle
2007 ZO6 16,500 miles
Mods - ZO6 muffler mod

Temp and Humidity range
63.16* - 68.14*
33% - 28% Yes the humidity was dropping as we tested.

First run was 449.28 / 420.42 I was hoping for 440 rwhp so I was really surprized with these numbers

Edit --- Adding more details on the pulls here.

ZO6 OEM filter **449.28/420.42**452.19/426.50**453.66/426.23
ZR1 OEM filter **457.13/-------**457.35/425.58**453.47/420.38
TKO reuseable **453.37/426.41** 455.67/423.08**449.92/414.94*

*The TKO was done last and heat soak started to set in.
Not sure what happen to the trq reading on the ZR1 1st run but it showed 500+lbs so I dropped that off.

Hood was up on all pulls. James added fans and ran 3 runs for the stock ZO6 filter then 10 minutes out to change to the ZR1 turned the fans back on and 3 more runs back to back. Fans off and added the TKO filter fired up the fans and ran 3 more back to back runs.

Please note where the A/F ratio is around 5K on the chart. 10/1 I think Jeremy wil be able to add some more HP when I have him add his Stage 1 ZO6 ported TB and upper intake and HP tune.

Here's a graph of the best run of each filter type.

So... the Stock Z06 filter is as good as the other two. Is that the point?

No. The OEM ZO6 filter makes less hp than the ZR1 and TKO air filters.

There's been alot of discussion concerning what the ZR1 filter does hp wise. It is a drop in filter and seals up nicely.

Thanks to CF vendor Kevin at the Parts Taxi who shipped the ZR1 to me we now have some actual proof that the ZR1 filter does flow more air and add hp. i.e. 1st run numbers 449 / 420 then ZR1 numbers 457 / 425.

Thanks, Dewman

But the stock Z filter makes the most torque?

Thanks for taking the time and posting this up. I'd be willing to bet with the A/F tweaked (leaned) the numbers between the three filters would even be closer.

Great Job!!

With only a 3.69hp/.8% spread best-to-worst all three filters are doing a great job of passing air!!

You had very good air that day!! With a .94-.95 correction, high pressure and low humidity actual's must have been off the charts in the 480+ hp and 450 ft-lbs range!!

E.

OK, flame suit on. I'd judge this one too close to call.

Here's a graph of the best run of each filter type.

i don't mean to be the engineering stick-in-the-mud here, but you only published the best run for each filter and they were within 4 rwhp (peak) of each other (less than 1% difference). There does not appear to be a significant difference for these numbers.

In all fairness, please publish all the peak rwhp numbers for each of the three runs for each filter. That way we can see the range of numbers for the same filter conditions and then we can estimate the approximate measurement error of the dyno. If the range of numbers for one filter is greater than 4 rwhp (over three runs), then any difference between the filters is statistically not significant.

At face value, you have proven to me that there is not much of a difference in these filters (less than 1%), all things being equal. You obviously have conducted an independent test and are not marketing a product. I just come to different conclusions from you independent data.

Cheers!

Interesting, thanks for posting.

It would've also been interesting to run no filter at all and see what it made.

I agree, and despite having never actually run a Dyno i would be willing to go out on a limb and state that the difference of 1-4 hp on a 500 hp motor can be easily marked up to dyno accuracy. i bet you if you ran the same filter 3 different times you could gat results that varied by that much.

what you really need to do is with a very sensitive vacum gauge to measure the amount of restriction going through the intake with the aformentioned filters!
i still say TKO's filter demonstration is a total crock! i saw the video where they placed an oval filter over the top of the test box and the ends of it overlapped the flow test box, thus none of the air would have gone through the filter!
very impressive!
and unless someone can proove that there is significant enough restriction from the stock unit i think the only performance gains can be had with the ram effect type units and the ones that get cold air from in front of the radiator.
