Halltech Project Ultraleggera Underway
This should be interesting to say the least. Halltech has started the weight reduction diet on our Z06, trying to leave no stone unturned.
Jason at Katech, has had car on a diet, and may be a little lighter, but not for long. He has a carbon fiber hood, Brembo Brakes, and just dropped the air conditioning.
Our goal is to have a car that is under 2900 lbs with around 670 HP. The latter has been accomplished, so now we work over the lbs part of the lbs/hp formula.
We have dropped the battery weight by 22lbs, the driveshaft by 5 lbs, the exhaust system by 46 lbs, flywheel by 12lbs, engine valve covers and accessories by 5 lbs, front floor mats, 4 lbs, and many other carbon fiber items we'll detail later. Even some new titanium parts are on the horizon.
Now comes the expensive stuff. We have the ZR1 brake system ordered, and will be installing them soon. Will there be issues? Who knows, but we'll find out, and solve them.
I have lost 20 lbs in the last 3 months, so you can see that I am serious about this.
Our shop in Brookfield has racing scales, so when we are finished, we can set the weight bias front to rear better than it is now.
Katech has something brewing which should be around 20lbs savings, coming soon. Maybe Jason will send us one next month or at least by the Autobahn.
The Carbon Z06 hood will not be available for some time, but this might shave some weight as well.
If you have any suggestions that might be helpful, let us know. We are open to good ideas, and I think this exercise will help our forum in the end. There aren't many folks that will purchase an $1800 battery to save 22 lbs, but the serious racer understands the reasoning.
I'm sure we'll hear from the guys that say donate blood and take a crap, we've heard all that before, so don't bother.

Hi Jim, do you sell that lightweight flywheel that will work with the stock LS7 clutch? Do you sell the less expensive Braille battery thats in the $200 range? Thanx.

We don't sell the flywheels, but Katech does. Check with Jason.
We are distributors for all Braille Batteries.
To be honest, they all suck except for the new Lithium Ion technology.
Seriously, I have three Braille lightweight batteries that are paperweights that are in the price range you are looking for. They are good for race day and the track only. Forget about leaving them for a week and expecting to start your car.
Not so, with this battery. When my tire went flat, the flashers were on for 3 hours, and the battery was still at 13.2 Volts. Autoshutoff if it ever gets down to 9V, and a shutoff switch for long term storage.

swap the seats for some caravaggios to save some weight w/o seat heaters. Also remove some of the sound deadening material. Can take out the radio. MCM Carbon Fiber or Hi-Teck Carbon Fiber hood. Should be able to save some weight in the wheels as well by going to mags.

MCM Hood
Titanium hood / hatch supports (?)
Rear carpeting removal
Are Lexan rear windows possible with the C6 rear glass design, or even worthwhile?
I'd bet even just the carbon fiber ZR1 roof panel alone would save weight, but the roof/halo combo should help
Radio & speaker delete
Pull the yellow insulation foam 'bags' out of the rear fender wells if you can get to them and they are in the Z06 - accidentally found some in a C6 coupe

You are missing the theme we are trying to create. Anyone can rip out radios and factory sound deadening material. That's not our project.
How about a Z06, that pretty much looks stock, except for a few components like wheels and brakes, but is around 2850 lbs and 665 HP. I like trolling for Supercharged Mustangs. At the track, it will run 9s all day long. On the street, it is as mild as and idles like stock. Less pain at the pump, but set aside big bucks for tires. Take your wife to the movies, and out to dinner, but flatten anything that pulls up along side you. The Caravaggios are definitely on the radar screen. There I agree.
The idea is to replace steel with titanium, aluminum with carbon fiber, heavy plastic parts with lightweight carbon fiber replacements, as if the car was being designed by a company that planned on selling them to customers that still want creature comforts but want lightweight components. We are looking for exotic lightweight replacements, and if they are carbon fiber, they will likely be painted, not left exposed. Most will not ever be seen.
This will be the ultimate street machine, not strictly track.
No labels, no insignias, no racing stripes, just business. I don't know, but this is the car I would have made the SuperVette, Blue Devil, or whatever they wanted to call it. Like Jim Painter says, "too much power? You can never have too much power."

Melting Slicks
Great project Jim! If you and Jason get your cars too light I may have to pull the AC out of the Mosler just to keep up! Good luck and keep us updated!

Awesome project on the weight reduction, although I'm sure it isn't cheap!

hi,
are you proficient with solidworks or CAD by any chance?
i would pay money for an accurate CAD drawing of the brake rotor hats and a reasonably externally dimensionally correct drawing of the caliper
e.g. CAD drawing of fitment in relation to the wheels, wheel bearings, uprights, etc
thanks for the time

We would not have the time nor the inclination to do this.
