Changed tranny fluid in 06 Z to GM's latest synthetic trans fluid & not as smooth now
I heard the newer Zs (2009s maybe 2008s) use a new GM all synthetic trans fluid and have heard some guys with 06 and 07 Zs changing to GM's latest and great full syn. trans fluid, so I decided to have my local Chevy Dealer upgrade me to their latest Z06 synthetic tranny fluid.
Did not notice any smoother shifting after doing this and the car is actually more difficult intermittently going into reverse when I did not have that issue before switching tranny fluids. Pretty frustating, what do you experts think is going on I feel like switching back to the same fluid that was originally called for in a 06 Z (but not sure I can after switching to a full syn. trans fluid).
I know they changed the trans in 2008 and newer Z06s, and has anyone put the new GM tranny fluid in their older style T56 trans in their 06 and 07 Zs, and if yes, did you notice any difference (for the better or worse?).

I did change my T56 fluid at ~22k to AMSOIL ATF which is fully synthetic. Now at ~43k. Shifting quality SOTP was unchanged. Nothing lost by the effort (really no effort at all!!!) because it is always a good idea to drain and replace the factory fluids at an appropriate time in the life cycle of any vehicle.

Mobil 1 taught us many years ago that some upgrades are upgrades to their profit.....ie they sell a lower quality product at the same price, and advertise it as an improvement. Just a thought.......

I know two Z06 guys that have switched to Royal Purple and said it was great!!! You might what to give that a try if you decide to change it again! Mine still has the original tranny fluid in it at 27k.... I probably need to do it too.

not sure about the latest GM synthetic fluid, but I just changed mine with DOT4 prestone brake fliud (5 times in two weeks period and ganna do another change tomorrow) I didnt really noticed anything different (no smother shifts or anything) but the clutch paddle did felt a bit lighter (I dont know if it has anything to do with changing the fluid to DOT4?) and if you wonder why I did 5 changes in two weeks, its because every 2-3 days the fluid turns black again!!!? I think I need few more till I get rid of all the black fluid!!

T56 known for notchcy shifts till warm. Nature of the beast, once my car is warm it shifts like butter. I guess im used to it. If i swapped it out it would be royal purple, ive heard good things about that. I will leave well enough alone for now.

I've used Redline ATF in a few T-56's and have had good/better results than stock. in the T-56's I believe you use the ATF in the manuals even tho its for autos.

Thanks for the replies and info guys.
Has anyone actually changed to the new synthetic trans. fluid that GM is using in the 09 and 10 Z06s? If yes, just wondering if you noticed a difference (better or worse) after doing so.

The MTF GM # 88861800 was analyzed and found to be essentially Dexron III. There is also a thread that says that GM says NOT to use Dex VI in their manual trannys, see here, http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...s-fluid-2.html
It's an old thread but it coincides with what I remember. That is to use Dex III in the tranny and to NOT use Dex VI. Dex VI is thinner than Dex III and GM went to Dex VI solely for CAFE purposes. FWIW I am using Amsoil Dex III fluid in my 6060 and have been happy with it.

BG Synthetics
I had my 07Z in too our local Chevrolet dealer a couple of weeks ago for a new clutch. While there, we changed the tranny and the differential fluids to the new synthetic that GM is marketing. I believe they were both BG products. I do remember them being expensive. I am fortunate to have a great friend who works there and he is also a great Vette mechanic! I didn't notice any difference in the way the car acted other than the obvious clutch improvement. Hope that helps...............

In all my old cars I used BG syncroshift with great results. I wonder if it would work in the z06.

I bought my 09 Z and the shifting drove me crazy. So at about 1,000 miles I had the dealership put in Royal Purple SynchroMax. It was so much smoother. Don't mess with the GM fluid, go with the Royal Purple.
