Default Easy Question: Tire Life

Looking to buy an '07 Z06 that has 5/32" of remaining tire tread on the original equipment tires. Would those that know classify these as an "immediate replace" or can you estimate how many more miles of reasonable driving I should expect? Thanks for you help!

Note that the tread depth on these tires new is stated to be 8/32"

What I have seen is the Goodyears only last 6-8 k . I purchased a new Corvette z06 in 2007 .Drove it from Toronto Canada to Newfoundland a trip of 3,000 km or 1,800 miles . There was a lot of road construction ,were they take the top layer of pavement off leaving a ribbed effect to bond to the new payment , This destroyed the tires when I got home to Newfoundland the tires were down to the wear bar . I called Goodyear tire .and that is what they told me . So I took the 4 goodyears off and replaced them with a better tire with more thread depth. I say you may get 2 to 3 k more . just my 2 cents

They're probably fine for awhile with 5/32 tread, but they will not have maximum grip.

Maybe 5000 mi left on the fronts, the rears all depend on you so I'd say 2500 on the rears! Buy the car not the tires, if it's what you want and is priced right you're okay.

As you stated full tread depth is 8/32". The wear bars show min tread depth at 2/32" remaining. Therefore, from new to must replace is 6/32" (8/32" - 2/32"). The tires on the car you looking at has used half of the tread, 3/32" with 3/32" of wear left until the wear bars.

Some people replace early - traction does start going away, but I have a hard time replacing tires with good tread left (tires are pricey). I also don't have problems with rain here in the desert of Las Vegas.

I agree with BearZ06 - you probably can get another 5000 miles, of course tire wear is very dependent upon driving styles. Common road wear for the GYs seem to run from about 7000 to 12000 miles on a set.

Cheers - Jim

I managed 12K out of mine. I could have nursed a few thousand more from them but I had new wheels and took that opportunity to install new rubber.

I'd say anything more than 15K is a bonus.

I got 9000 out of my rears, the fronts are nearly done as well. I am going to get michelin ps2's to replace them i think.

I bought my car with 5K miles on it, and I thought the rear tires looked halfway decent. Well, I burned off the remaining tread on the rear after only 1000 miles probably because I'm a throttle junkie. Now I am running Nitto Invos. I have about 8K miles on them so far, and they still have good tread both front and rear. I'll probably get at least 12-15K miles out of them. That said, a friend of mine who did not drive as aggressively (and just recently sold his car) got over 20K miles out of his stock tires. Granted, they were showing cord by the time he switched them out, but they were still holding air.

Once you get past the wear bars they become dangerous in the rain. That being said, I have cord showing on mine as we speak,

If they're the original tires they're 3-4 years old. These tires don't age well. I would replace more or less immediately.

These cars eat tires, and that's a fact.

When I purchased my 08Z a year ago it had 13.5K miles on it. The front tires were fine but the rears were showing the wear bars on the outside portion of the tread. I have seen a lot of Z06s wear the rear tires the same way. The rear alignment settings for good wear are very critical. Toe in has to be kept to a minimum. If the tread depth is equal all the way across the tires should last you quite a while.

You'll need new shoes sooner than later,in 2 to 3K miles. Stock replacements are about $1600 plus shipping (Tire Rack) or you can go with the General Exclaim UHP's for $766
(10/32nds and Non-Runflat)..........you can go through two complete sets with $68 in your pocket!

I'll be trying these out in about two months.............

Alignment is a major factor and varies significantly from the factory. I got about 14,000 miles out of mine with several HPDEs, but my alignment was on-spot.

How many miles on the Z?

I'm getting ready to put my 4th set of rears on in 22,000 miles. After the first set, I had it aligned. It just comes down to driver and how you drive it. Simple as that. Some tires wear faster than others, true-- but no tire will hold up to aggressive driving.

As other people have said, it all depends on how you drive. I don't track my car and don't do very many burnouts. I have gone through 2 sets on my 06 Z and got right around 25k out of each set. I decided to try the General Exclaim UHP non run flats and so far I love them. Cheaper (about half the cost of GY), quieter, good straight line traction, longer tread life. About the only negative is cornering is a bit mushy, but that is to be expected since it isn't a RF.

I've had the GY Supercar run flats on both my '05 Z51 (27,000 miles) and my '07 Z06 (32,000 miles). Both cars have gotten about 11,000 miles on the rears and 14,000 on the fronts. If you change, go to Michelin PS2. They are now out in Z06 sizes in run flat. They aren't cheap. Why buy a Corvette and then go cheap on tires, it seems kind of dumb to me. Don't give up the run flat feature or settle for less handling.

Same reason people who are hard on shoes get theirs at Payless Shoe Source and not Footlocker. You could pay more, but why?

Thanks for all of the responses.

Car has 7,000 miles so it appears that I can stretch things a bit but should be mindful of conditions!
