Default Catch Can Contents

Emptied my catch can yesterday evening. It was first time in a year. The car had less than 3k miles since last emptied.

It contained 34 cc's of oil....I measured it. Filled the bottom fourth of a beer can. Only street miles. (there was a romp late last winter/early spring at say speeds of 145 + mph....and rpm to 6k).

Does anyone know which "street" conditions exists that cause this car to spit out that much oil in crankcase vapors?

Also, does anyone know if I could plump this directly back to sump tank?

BTW, it's a '10 Z06 w/11,400 on clock now, had since new.

I have a catch can on my F150 and something like this this came up.

The consensus over on the F150 forums, was that you don't want to reuse the contents of the catch can, so I don't know that you would want to plumb that back to your sump tank. I don't know if that's a good idea.

I would not resuse it. Could possibly be small chunks of carbon and other debris from going through the hoses to the fan. Imo it's better to just dump it.

I would not reuse, as if no catch can the intent of the pcv system is to burn this off so seems to me a bad idea to put back in the oil system.

Oh, and how about driving the thing more often. Just 3k miles in a years time.

Do not reuse. The catch can generally gets filled up with hard driving on a track where there are lateral g-loads. Should not be a worry on the street.

Hey now....the freak'in thing sat on blocks dam near ALL summer. Aftermarket wheels (2 ea.) had finish issue so I had to send them back. When I went to put the factory wheel/tires back on BOTH the rears were flat. Had them up in storage area (second floor) and didn't know until I brought them down.

I had them repaired but it's been so dam hot around here even the devil won't come around (avg 102 w/70% humidity-literal steam bath)

Otherwise, it would have 15k on it now as I do put 4-5k mi/yr on it and have had it now 2.5 going on 3 yrs now. And I can drive it 10-11 months/yr in these parts.
