[Z06] New Z06 oil change ?
#2
I had my first oil change at 1000 miles.
I have always done this with new cars just to get rid of any metal filings or debris that would have been left. (OK maybe I'm just being OCD but is is my Vette.)
I follow the Manufacturer's recommendation and refill with Mobil 1. There are others here who swear for other oil brands and have differing needs due to racing or mods.
I chage my oil about 1X a year but I only put about 5K miles/year on "Big Bird". I follow the "oil life" status on the Computer even with that, I change oil at about 5K miles anyway.
Bottom line: Do what you want and what feels comfortable to you.

If you are just doing street driving or the drags, M1 5W -30 should be OK. You could try M1 5W-30 high mileage for its higher Zinc and phosphorous anti-wear properties. If you are going to do road circuit work, some of us have gone to M1 0W-40. Your new Z06 should have the water/oil cooler heat exchanger which reportedly warms the oil up more quickly and also keeps it cooler on the track. If you start seeing 260* oil temps, you may want to switch to M1 0W-40.
Make sure to have the oil temp at ~175* and check the oil level between 5-20 minutes after shutdown. To get accurate, comparable readings try to get the same temperature and the same shutdown time for each reading.
If you have someone else (dealer, other shop) do the oil change, make sure they know that there are two drain plugs, that they put in the correct amount of oil and that you check it right after the change (w proper temp & shutdown time) as many have had the wrong amount of oil put in. If your car is new, it has the 10 1/2 quart system.

Thank you. I have had some people tell me 500 miles and some say 5000miles first change. I plan on keeping the car for a long time. I want to do what is best.

I always do my new engines in the first 2K miles. I must say though, that there is not much "debris" in the engine; they are carefully assembled at Wixom. "Break-in" is mostly for the rest of the drive train, and not the engine.

It's not only left over machining "debris" that is in the oil, but as the rings break in and the microscopiclly sharp honing surface mates to the rings, some metal is circulated throughout the oil. The filter traps some, and it is a small amount, but some like to get rid off this first batch of oil earlier.

Changed mine at 7500 miles. We picked it up at the factory Nov 05, 2005 and nobody had a filter so we just kept driving her. 35k now with lots of track days. Mobil 1 only and haven't had any problems.
When is the last time YOU have had an oil related failure on a non modded vehicle?

2020 C5 of the Year Finalist - Unmodified
Interesting question...mine will be changed in the Spring, with 1,300 miles on it, that is because it will have been a year since the original oil fill and the oil needs to be changed at least annually, regardless of miles. So, if you just bought your car, and only put, say, 750 miles on it and then stored for the winter, then you would need to change it before you bring it out of storage, if it has been a year. Otherwise, I would agree with others that say first change NLT 1,000 to 1,500 miles.

I would follow the manufacturers instructions. A lot of thought and testing goes into the procedures to assure the customer has a good experience with the product. If you still insist on changing the oil early on I would add a break in additive to the oil when you change it to assure at least the first few thousand miles of engine life are with an oil that contains a break in assistant.

Running factory fill Mobil 1 5-30 for track use is just scary. LGM has reported many cam and lifter wear/failures from the lack of antiwear additives in this oil. It's not the quality oil it used to be.
I would at minimum upgrade to Mobil 1 0-40 or better yet Redline or Gibbs oils.
I personally went with Redline , good for street and track use.

Actually a few 06-08 Z06's had bottom end failure from high-G left hand turns at 1+ G's, which is why GM went with the 10 1/2 qt. system in 2009. Testing showed that after just over 4 seconds the suction couldn't keep up and the engine would starve for oil pressure. See this link:

At 23,000 miles, I had to replaced 16 lifters, followed by (two weeks later!) a new camshaft AND 16 additional new lifters. No one offered a positive reason for failure, but I still use M1 5-30. The vehicle had never been tracked, raced, or otherwise abused. After my first two C6 Z's, I know better!
I actually had one technician state it might be due to changing the oil too often!
Now have 44,500 on the odometer and have had no other engine component failures.

I just drive them until the OLM says to change the oil or I approach the mileage or annual change requirement. Only time I hit the mileage requirement in the last 15 years was with my 08 Malibu and that was in the first year where I had to change the oil after 10 months of usage. Since then it is on the once per year schedule of the Vette and Tahoe. All 3 vehicles see about 6K per year.

I did my first oil change at about 500 miles and I'm do the old skool every 3,000 mile oil change. I wasn't as good about my coupe and did the oil changes more like every 5,000. I drove it 46,000 without any trouble.
