Default pushrod measurement help

So, I have the pushrod checker and am measuring 17 turns of the checker to get 0 rock in the rocker arm when trying to measure out the length. Some are about a quarter turn more, some a quarter turn less.

I measured both intake and exhausts.

When I multiply and add .08 preload I am getting pushrods between
7.73" and 7.7425"

7.75 pushrod gives me .0875 preload
7.80 pushrod gives me .1375 preload

So, obviously I need some new rods at 7.75.

I don't need to be exact and get some 7.75 and some 7.73 etc so they are all exactly the same do I?

Whats a good place to order some pushrods for the street? 3/8 right?

Someone else will have to confirm the 3/8 fit the heads, but Trend is a great place to order from. Quality and service.

Hey Chris
I believe you have a new cam from katech?...If so, which one? you should be able to use your stock push rods?...Maybe some of the the guys will chime in about the pushrods?

they didnt tell you what to use with your special cam? or is it an experiment that hasnt been done yet? just asking, i dont remember anyone asking about pushrods before. chances areyour ok with stock pushrods, but find out. besides that.... how are you feeling? hopefully your fully healed. i was watching your progress earlier this month. again, hope all is well. its quite a job, especially in this car and youve never done one before. good job.

Thanks... yes eye is slowly getting back to normal. It ended up going to 20/60 vision from 20/20 because of swelling and all that but should just be temporary.

I got a new cam and heads milled and the place said they do not tell people theyd be fine with stock because they don't want to risk someone blowing up and blaming them.

I did measure which is why I think I need shorter pushrods, I just wanted to make sure those numbers make sense to people and where to start looking.

(and thanks again...)

Wow Chris, I forgot about your eye...I am glad you are recovering...It will be difficult for anyone to comment on the push rods, not know all the cam specs?

Given your measurements, 7.75 all the way around will be close enuf. You could probably use your OEM pushrods... .137 is about the original preload, altho some say that is kinda deep.

I spoke to Brian Tooley not long ago about some other stuff and he said he has non-OEM length LS7 pushrods, and the price was right. Give him a call

basically, 620-630 lifts, 230s duration. I'm measuring with the the lifters on the base circle.

the 17ish turns was verified on 4 different valves, give or take .2 of a turn. Shortening it up a quarter of a turn on those causes it to start SLIGHTLY ticking when you move the rocker, as its noooot quite tight.

And yeah, eye is slowly getting better thanks

Yeah I know the lifters go to about .2" of preload but if katech says the best thing for durability and noise is .08ish, im going closer to .08

By using the pushrod length tool, such as MM is doing, there is no need to know the cam specs.

Just as long as it was your second choice, I guess that's ok.

So.... In looking at the comp cams hi-tech ones (seamless over the magnums non-seamless), these don't have the 210 degree ball ends like the stock rods.

Is that needed on these, or is the 180 degree ends enough? How can I tell?

Also, what about wall thickness... Obviously thicker is better in theory but is there too-thick for our engines?
