Default Need Traction - Wheels & DR's Question

Searched around and a lot of info but wanted to ask Directly--

Need Traction!

Im looking for a set of Extra rear wheels for my Z
to take to the Drag Strip every once and a while. I don't really want to put DR's on my Stock wheels.

What (inexpensive) way are forum members going about this?
I know there are some bad azz wheel set ups but NOT looking for
the best of the best, Just something that works Good for the money and looks decent as well.

Thanks for any help

EDIT: Pictures would be Awesome

For drag racing purposes, a direct bolt-on solutions is the C5 Z06 17x9.5 front wheels. With Hoosier 275/40/17 or 315/35/17 drag radials, this combo is going to be the cheapest, lightest, and just possibly the fastest, drag pack you can put on your Z. I have a set of wheels that I'm selling as well.

Using 17x11 C4 ZR1 replicas on 315/35/17 is pretty popular as well.

Front because I assume the back ones are 18". The vettes have been using different size rims front to back for years. You really want to have the most rubber possible.

Proper offset (to clear the rear caliper), and this is the smallest diameter wheel that will clear the factory rear brake rotor. You want to run the least amount of mass you can, while providing the neccassary tire patch and sidewall for grip.

Actually, you want the smallest/lightest combo that will get the job done. Many owners have over-tired their cars, thinking that they were going to need this large tire to get the neccassary traction, when in fact, the smaller tire was all that was needed.

Take a look at the Fast List for reference on what tire/wheel combo the majority of the owners who participate in drag racing are using, and you'll see just how capable and popular this particular combination is.

Yes sorry I was being far to "general" FNBADAZ06. I was just referring that the front 17" that was a better option than a bigger 18" rear. allowing for a little more sidewall. I wasn't disputing the combo, I will most likely grab myself the exact same thing. But I haven't even driven the car yet.....bought it in january and if this snow doesn't melt soon, i just may look into purchasing a flamethrower. I have new (purchased with car) 325/30ZR19's Michelin pilots sports (not cups) and curious to see how they hold up....i think the cups would be next

No worries, my friend

The new Michelin Super Sports are supposed to offer 80% of the performance of the Cups, while offering fantastic mileage wear. I've never gotten more than 6-8K miles out of my Cup tires, but for extreme performance in WARM weather, they are the king of street treaded R-comp tires

That's a good bit of first hand experienced info. Very good to know. I don't think i want to do much more than 5-8k a yr. would love to keep the milage down. if you got max 8000miles that would give me 12800km it may get me 2 summers. I think I could live with that.

275/40/17 and 315/35/17 are the sizes which fit a 9.5" rim.
Hoosiers are going to be the lightest, and generally speaking, the fastest, of the drag radial tires in that specific size. But, you'll find treaded drag radials in that size from Mickey Thompson, Nitto, etc.

I don't know if you are stock and don't know if you're looking for "best of both worlds", but I just installed MPSS 345's and this beast dead hooks in every gear/RPM.

Hoosiers are a DOT drag tire. Wouldn't want to do much if any street driving on them.

What are guys running with a 345 on a stock C6Z rim? 345/30ZR19? if so, they are about 60-70$ less expensive then 325/30ZR19's my cost if I compare the sport cups and about 30$ difference between the super sports.

would that cause an abs issue without a tune? being a little taller? is there a clearance issue?

I just bought a complete set of LG world challenge wheels..18x10 19x12.. also bought some 345/30ZR19 for the rear and some 265 nitto for the front.. This is strictly a drag set up for me as I have a nice set of asanti's 19/20 on there for street driving..

While they are a DOT, they are in fact a radial "slick" , with only two small grooves in the treaded area. These tires are not for normal street driving, plus, you wouldn't want to heat cycle them out with extended street driving anyways. They are meant for dedicated track use, but if you are within reasonable driving distance from the track you're racing at, you could drive on them to get to the track.

For a more street friendly drag radial tire with true treaded surfaces, you'd be looking at Mickey Thompsons or equivalent. For a full time drag radial tire that looks good on the car, the Nitto NT05R 345/30/19 is the tire of choice for many.

So....in conclusion, for a max traction "drag radial" type setup :

1) dedicated drag strip combo for use ONLY at the track, the Hoosier 275/40/17 05 315/35/17 on C5 Z06 wheels are going to be the fastest.

2) For an everyday drag radial tire that can be driven on the street, the NT05R in 345/30/19 is the tire of choice, on standard sized C6 Z06 wheels.

3) For an everyday tire that is not a dedicated "drag radial", but offers tremendous grip in warm weather, Pilot Sport Cups are going to be very hard to beat.
