Default Exhaust Rattle from Baffles

Hi Folks,

New to the forum. Looking to see if anybody has experienced this issue on their C6 Z06 stock exhaust. All of a sudden I have a rattle coming out of the exhaust. I'm pretty sure it's one of the Baffles. When I manually push the arm that opens up the baffles it changes the sound in the rattle. This is what makes me believe that's what is making the noise. It looks to me like the baffles are held in with a screw. Before I go messing with the whole thing I just thought I'd ask if anybody else has experienced this. If so, what was the fix?

Best Regards

Gary

Hi!

Maybe you have the same problem as i had a few days ago. This was an awefull sound between 1500 and 2000rpm. We welded it together and welded a stake in, so the "big" steel sheet can`t swing anymore. I think this started from the pipe welding. The crack is about 3,5 inch each side.
Now it sounds perfect again .. real hard sounding.

Fixing: open the muffler like you do on the Muffler Mod, watch for the right side to open!!!!

Best regards

thomas

this is somewhat common, happens on both the base and Z06 mufflers.

Put your car on a lift and make sure these springs/hangers are not loose.

My problem is for gertain with the the actual baffles. That's what I'm calling the 2 round pieces that swing upen during acceleration. They are located in the 2 middle exhaust pipes. If your car in neutral but running, you can lay down and open the baffles by manually pulling on the plunger looking things located above the 2 middle exhaust pipes. When I do that the rattle goes away so I know it's coming from the round swing pieces (Baffles). I may not be calling everything the correct name but I am certain where that rattle is coming from.

SteveDoten@ARH, is this what you mean by a "common problem"

Thank you to anyone that can help.

It's not internal. It's his butterfly valves. Try tapping the bolts on the bottom where the flaps hinge with a large nail and hammer to tighten it up.

I can try tapping the bottom with a nail and hammer,..no prob. If it doesn't work, I can't see any issue with just welding them open. Is there an issue with that? The car is an 06 with 24,000 miles on it.

That exhaust is still 8 years old. I'm realistic about the life of those nore special type parts up here in New England where cars sit for a good amount of time each year. The chrome is still good and welding them open seems like a good fix to just extend the life of the mufflers without having to deal with the rattle. I HATE THE RATTLE!!!!!

I had the exact same problem with my 06Z. My problem was the result of a vacuum problem, split vacuum hose in the engine compartment behind the fuel rail covers.
I just shortened the hose by about 1" and spliced in a new section of hose with the help of a brass coupling from Home Depot. In my profile section I show a picture of the location of the vacuum line. It has a corrugated plastic protective cover under which lies the hose in question. Check it out, hope this helps.

The internal baffle welds have been a known issue for a long time. The reason the sound changes when the valves open is because most of the exhaust starts flows through the straight pipe in the muffler Vs through the baffled section of the muffler thus there is not as much exhaust flow through that section to cause the noise.

Sorry I've been busy the last couple days. So if the baffle weld is broken, what's the fix? Can the baffles be replaced?

Mine was the passenger side that had the busted baffle. I simply replaced that side with a used muffler/over-the-axle pipe. As I recall I payed about $150 for it and $50 for the muffler shop to swap it.

You really need to have the car on a lift to accomplish as a large rotational sweep (over and around the axle) is required to get the muffler off and on.

Mine were rattling a year or so ago. I took a black zip tie and tied it around the baffle arm to the hanger. It put just enough tension on the baffle to stop it from moving up and down through the shaft which was causing the rattle.

Perhaps I'm way off (), but how about spraying the valves with WD40? Especially since your car is garaged so much of the year.
Just sayin...........................
GOOD LUCK!!!!

I can try the WD 40 but everything moves just fine. It's a rattle not a squeak. I ended up taking zip ties and making a ring the was pulled tight while the car was off so the baffles were open. Now the can't close and they don't rattle. All 4 pipes are fully open all the time. To tell you the truth, the car sounds way better IMO.

Wut?!? You jimmied the valves open? Just pull the fuse out of the passenger footwell fuse box and it'll always be open - welcome to Highway Droneville.
