Default TR6060 2nd gear grind

I think the 2nd gear syncro took a dump. I have 23k miles on the car. Anyone else experienced something similar?

1) Shifter is aligned properly. Just did the alignment procedure. Everything appears correct.

2) Grinds only from 1st to 2nd when moving and the clutch is depressed. All other gears are fine. I am about to swap clutch fluid and try again...hoping it doesn't disengage completely...but then again other gears are ok.

3) If I am at a dead stop for more than a few seconds with the clutch depressed it goes in to 2nd with no grind. If I stop and shift in to 2nd without waiting a few seconds it will grind in 2nd. If I am moving and downshifting or up shifting into 2nd it will grind. This leads me to think the syncro is no loger good.

4) Last, any idea what it should cost me? Just emailed my local shop. I could pull the trans myself if I really had to just would proffer not to.

I used to have this only when the transmission was cold and of course much worse when the weather was cold. Does it happen all the time? (this was on my 2008 LS3 base car with the TR-6060)

Yes warm or cold. Was perfect up until the past weekend. I see a few places that do rebuilds. I might just pull it out and send it off unless my local shop is comparable in which case I will have them do the whole thing.

So far I found this. I am confident I can get the thing out in a weekend after reading some DIYs.

It sounds like a synchro to me.

If the car has any drag strip time then that makes it even more likely.

If it were me, and I had the facilities to drop the tranny myself, I'd just take it apart and put a 2nd gear synchro in it (only, unless the shop manual specifies that some other part(s) must be replaced with the synchro) and be done with it. I would not try this without the shop manual.

Shouldn't cost much at all doing it that way. Shop rebuild will cost a ton because they'll replace everything (at least that will probably be their usual approach).

Of course if I went that far I'd be looking at the clutch, installing a Katech remote clutch bleeder, and probably replacing the Giubo's (unless they looked excellent) and inspecting the torque tube bearings... all those wear items that are normally difficult to get to.

.

First thing to try is to change the tranny fluid. The factory recommended fluid took care of the cold weather gear nibble on my TR6060. Less than an hour and less than $100 of tranny fluid is worth trying versus dropping the tranny. Others may recommend their favorite tranny fluid.

Look at it being almost 1000$ in labor for at least a 10 hour job (100$ per hour)

Thanks for the replies. Talked to my local shop. Got quoted $450 for removal and re-installation. That does not include rebuild. Taking it in next week to get removed and will go from there if fluid swaps do not fix it. I noticed most full rebuilds run around 1200ish dollars (for a stage 1 basic rebuild) so under 2k for everything is not too bad IMO. But who knows might not be anything major....being optimistic.

Didn't you swap out your own heads? I think you would be able to tackle the replacement of a transmission. Just send it out to get rebuilt.
