Look/swab inside the rubber hose that attaches to the side of the throttle body (not the accordian hose).. If it has a lot of oil inside, you need the catch can.
If you want to work harder, remove the intake tube, poke the throttle body blades open, and peer inside the intake manifold with a good flashlight for wet oil. No oil = no need for catch can.

Most often used if you're Forced Induction (blower/turbo) , not as common on n/a engines

No. Never had an issue without a catch can.

I just took my heads off this week, a 4k mile motor, only mod is headers. The intake runners were completely coated with thick oily gunk. Run your finger over it and it would stick. Promptly ordered a catch can.

I purchased the Elite catch can after having an issue at NJMP with oil being belched out of the air filter and sprayed back over the engine. Was running up close to redline but not at or over. After I installed the can, I ran Pocono and dumped about 3.5 oz out at the end of the day. No problem on the street though, I just checked and had just a very small amount on the bottom. My problem was very obvious but Mark's method will identify anything less obvious for you. I don't know why mine was blowing out like that, but at least now the can collects it.

My car never used any oil until I did my H/C swap. After the H/C package it started using oil and sure enough it was being sucked into the intake. So in my case I only needed the catch can after the H/C swap.

Since the car is driven extremely hard, an Elite Engineering catch can was a good choice. Only wished that we had installed it earlier. Found an excessive amount of oil in the intake manifold before getting one.

I have 3 on my car now.
I'm selling an RX monster one for a great price if you want one.

Burning Brakes
The question is does YOUR Z need a catch can. This varies by car as some LS7s will use oil whether or not they are being tracked, and sustained high rpm operation will accelerate oil consumption. Other LS7s burn little to no oil on or off the track, and it would be unnecessary to install a catch can on those engines. My experience is like Bill D's. My car has never used a drop of oil on or off the track.
