[Z06] Z07 Sticky
#622
My 13 Z07 3LZ CF hood
Hey in the spirit of the "sticky promotion" I am posting some stuff I have on my car's show banner. I researched some numbers, wrote a story and post it on the car because I always get the same questions!
You could edit out the last "about my car" section and it is a good generic short story of why a Z07 is worth some "special respect"!!
NOTE: I realize that I didn't break out the 2011 carbon, vs Z07 production numbers...so sue me I think most Z07 cars had both with 30-ish passing on the carbon bits
Here it is:
What is a Z06/Z07 and why is that such a big deal?
All Corvettes are special cars, yet over the years Chevrolet has offered us a few “extra” special cars very often without much fanfare. Just by checking a box on the order form and paying a premium price, a customer might have wound up with one of 216 1967-1969 427 L88 Corvettes, or one of 199 “Fuelie Z06s” back in 1963. Today these and other special Corvettes have reached rock star status among Corvette enthusiasts and can bring over a million dollars at major auctions. With total production of just 740 cars over three years, the 2011-2013 C6 Z07 is certainly one of those kind of cars.
How and why is this the case?
Starting in 2006, Chevrolet introduced the Z06 version of the C6 Corvette. It had radical flared fenders, better brakes, suspension and, best of all, a roaring 7.0 liter LS7 engine. It turns out that 7.0 liters just happens to work out to 427 cubic inches! They had not offered a 427 Corvette for a long time and they sold lots of them. It was very fast, powerful and was one of the best performing cars of the day.
In 2009 the “Blue Devil” Corvette ZR1 was introduced. With a Supercharged 6.3 Liter engine it made over 638 horsepower. It also offered carbon fiber bodywork and carbon ceramic brakes for the first time. Along with all this hardware, the ZR1 supported this power with a very advanced multi-mode stability, magnetic selective ride and traction control system that led the industry. It worked great on the track too, famously setting an all time record for street tires at the Nürburgring. If you wanted the most powerful Corvette made, you ordered a ZR-1.
But what about the Z06 and its awesome normally aspirated 427 engine? Can they still sell it against a 638hp ZR1 when it has ONLY 505 HP? That became a serious issue as Z06 sales were falling and Chevy wanted to fix it. The answer was offered during 2011 in the form of a limited edition “Carbon edition” Z06. The RPO code was Z07 and it was indeed something special. The Z07 package had all the carbon bodywork, ceramic brakes, and advanced electronics of the more expensive ZR1, but it retained its 427 engine. The car was immediately loved by racers and track day drivers. Its torquey, high-revving 427 was the prefect engine for the track. Unlike the ZR1, with it's intercooler and supercharger prone to heat up and slow the car down, the Z07 never lost any power during the course of an on track session. While the ZR1 might pull ahead at the start it would soon heat up and lose some power allowing the Z07 to catch up by producing its 505HP relentlessly all day long and also enjoying it's significant weight advantage. Chevrolet had created the best Corvette for the track ever, even delivering the car on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires, that were basically racing slicks! In 2012 they dropped the “Carbon edition” moniker but quietly still offered the Z07 Package. In 2013 they bundled the Carbon Package and the Z07 option together and called it the “Ultimate Performance Package” With this package and the top 3LZ leather trim you added over $25,000 in cost to your Z06 making a well equipped car flirt with $100,000. For all that money, what you got, was a Corvette ZR1 with a 427 instead of a blower. With the new C7 Z06/Z07 being Supercharged and much heavier, the C6 Z07 will forever remain the ultimate example of a normally aspirated 427 Corvette ever produced.
About my car:
Chevrolet produced 540 Z07 equipped Corvettes in 2011, just 117 in 2012 but only made 83 Z07 cars in 2013 and of those only a handful were equipped with the top line 3LZ trim package. The car in front of you is one of those few. It was built in February 2013 during the last days of C6 Corvette production. This very car was the second to last black Z06 and the 18th from last C6 Z06 Corvette ever made. In fact only 172 more C6 Corvettes of any spec were built after this one.. It is 100% stock, I am the original owner and it is not for sale!
So of course, just like an old 427 L88 car, it looks very similar to many other ordinary black Corvettes but if you know what you are looking at, its actually kind of a big deal! Thank you for enjoying the car.

Yep! I had my spread sheet out when the ordering was available for the 2012 but I wanted black…just black. That wasn't available in 2012. Only metallic black. That was a deal breaker for me. So Thank God for the JeffHardy search site, as I was on the hunt for the only 2011 Black Zo7 left in the country which I bought. I added the wheels, and carbon Fiber, but do wish I had PTM. But lucked out with the loud exhaust! LOL
All great rare cars indeed, with their own little bragging rights!

Lowered on stock bolts
Dropped 3/4 in on stock bolts and aligned.
Subtle but helps the stance.
B92 CF hood. Seems to be the option most z07's don't have. The 427 verts grabbed a lot of them.

All of the unique qualities of the Z07's, cooling, brakes, wheels and tires, the amazing exhaust...unlike all of the other "Special Editions" that are just stripes and wheels (except the Carbons) the 2011 Z07's have the amazing exhaust and more HP, the CF roof and everything that goes along with it! No offense intended to any other Z06 discussed in this post; all Corvettes are very cool!
That is from "the lowliest equipped" ZO6, to the most "fully equipped" ZO6. Therefore the claim that a ZO7 equipped ZO6 has more HP than "all other ZO6" is NOT based in fact. At least as far as GM conveys it in their official documentation.
Granted, "the exhaust tone is better", but that is merely due to the type and location of the catalytic converter - which also, DOES NOT extrapolate into "higher Horse Power".
Granted, you have a carbon roof, ceramic brakes, which are great options to have, BUT - NONE of those items "adds HP".
I decided that the C6 ZO6 427 Limited Edition (Wil Cooksey Edition), is my choice, having had several Corvettes throughout my lifetime, HOWEVER, IN REALITY it is no different than any other ZO6 to come off the line, other than the separate "packages" that were included in the car during production.
My choice for buying "a Cooksey", quite frankly, is that I simply love the color combination - interior and exterior. That is all.
With my posting, I merely wanted to put to rest that "somehow mine is better than yours/ OR yours is better than mine attitude OUGHT TO STOP WITH THE REALIZATION AND ACCEPTANCE ALL LS7 EQUIPPED CORVETTES ARE THE SAME AS ANY OTHER LS7. NO MATTER HOW MANY "BAGDES, OR PACKAGES WE PILE UPON THEM."
I wish that we could all get beyond this pettiness and merely join together in the appreciation of a super awesome automobile that we have had the blessing of utilizing & enjoying in our short lived lives.

I/O is very rare, there were only 163 I/O Corvettes built in 2011, this included all C6's, Carbons and Z07's unfortunately Chevy does not slice and dice their production numbers totally, to be able to tell how many I/O Z07's were built, although there were only 16 I/O 427 verts built in 2013.

Oh boy, here we go...
This "quote" has been hanging out there, in mid-air (for me), for quite some time. I have thoroughly examined the build sheets of several ZO7 equipped ZO6's and the ONLY reference that I have found regarding the engine/HP is; the engine on ALL is listed as "LS7 505HP".

From 2012 the Z06 used the ZR1 Air Filter Element, allegedly this brings two horsepower! But it's more expensive and must be changed more frequently.
past 2012 - Partnumber 15776148
since 2012 - Partnumber 25940997

Good luck finding the "true" higher flowing version of the ZR1 Donaldson air filter. Hib Halverson has a thread some where on CF regarding this.
