Does anybody out the valet key in a magnetized case hidden under the car?
I recently locked my key fob in the trunk at the golf course. I don't understand why the horn honks 3 times and the car won't lock if you leave the key fob in the passenger compartment, but if you leave it in the trunk the car locks and WON'T unlock! Yet it unlocks if the key fob is right outside of the hatch!!
I remember hearing guys getting a small, magnetized case and putting the valet key in it and sticking it underneath the car somewhere.
Anyone doing this?
What case did you get and where?
Where are you sticking the case underneath the car?
I had lost my 2nd key fob in my move last year, so had to have GM roadside send someone to get me back into the car. Not a fun time.
I have since ordered a 2nd key fob, but this may be a good solution..
Thanks!
Ron

I have not done this, but the previous owner had a key ground, then drilled a hole in it. He mounted they key behind the license plate using the bolt through the hole in the key. Guess finding a tool to loosen the bolt is then your problem... but I guess it is easier to fix.
Not everyone has Onstar, I don't.

I put a key in a magnetic box under the front bumper on my Jeep. Thief found it and stole the car. Never got it back. Just saying'.......keep an extra key in your wallet if you're forgetful.

Spare key(cost me $3.20 each) is cheaper than On Star. I have roadside assistance(1-800 number) through State Farm on all my cars if I need a tow, etc, so I don't need On Star on the C6Z for that.

I don't have onstar active...don't use it..
I had to get something out of my SUV, so I ended up with my house/office key ring, and BOTH sets of car keys in my jacket pocket. Upon arriving at the golf course, I removed my jacket and grabbed the "car key" from my jacket and put it in my pants pocket.
The problem was I didn't look at which car key I grabbed because I had forgotten I had BOTH sets in my pocket, something that I NEVER do. So I felt for the house/office key ring, pushed it over in my pocket and grabbed the keyfob without thinking it could be the wrong one. I came out to the car after my round only to be devastated to learn I had grabbed the wrong one!
Anyone know why the keyfob in the trunk doesn't alert the system or allow it to be unlocked??

This seems to happen mostly to owners who play golf or work out at a gym, which is exactly why I don't do either.
Actually, if you don't like the wallet choice, I'd consider using the original 200 MPH duct tape and taping a key someplace like inside a fender vent or....

From the car's POV, the trunk was far enough from the sensor to think that the FOB was outside the vehicle.
I did learn the same "lesson" you did - while working on the head-swap, I left the fob in the car (in the console IIRC), BUT I wasn't sure what would happen, so I left the windows down.. It was interesting after a period of time, when I went to grab the door handle and it didn't open - errr - o.k., DON'T do that again!
In my case I could just go get the other one upstairs, or reach down and open it with the hand release.

being a pisces, I mislay my keys often and have locked my car w/ keys in it often..
Keys in the trunk are in a blind zone for the transmitter.
I have a "valet" key cut w/ out the fob I wedge it in a crack in the molding below the car and use gorilla tape to cover it .. never fell off even on the track..
if some one finds it, only opens the doors and cannot drive away.
cheaper than OnStar and onstar only works if there is a phone signal and in Texas we have dead zones.

This was so traumatic for you, you'll never do it again, so any preventive measures you are considering is overkill.

When I bought my 2008 ZO6 I noticed right away that I couldn't get all the water from behind the rear license plate after I washed the car. I purchased a swing up license plate frame that was original on the late 60's Camaro. Now I can just lift the plate and dry behind it.
This would be a great and easy access place to store a spare key. I can't imagine anyone even thinking about looking there.
Now that I look at the photos I think I'll go out now and wash the car.

I think you can find them anywhere that handles repo pieces for classic cars.
I bought mine from Goodmark Enterprises, Lawrenceville, GA.

They cost about $30.

The carbon fiber license plate frame is a separate piece.
That was from Leea Customs. When I ordered it back in 2008 it cost about $70. I thought that was kind of high but it is a nice piece. I ordered it from http://www.nakidparts.com/index.html
They were a Forum vendor at the time, may still be.
