I did not remove anything from the bore. I imagine there's a lot of crap in the oil pan. There was a ton in the manifold and a lot would up in cyl 5. It's resting on top of the piston.

Or those that say a solid stem steel exhaust valve is a bad choice. Looks like a confirmation on reworked heads fitted with SS exhaust valves.

Things I'm somewhat amazed by:

The combustion chamber isn't more destroyed.
That rod is still basically in one piece.
Literally there's nothing left of the piston attached to said rod.
The pin is still on the rod.

The rod got angry at the sleeve. Sleeve shattered. Block cracked.

When you get a chance I'm sure everyone would like to see what's in the oil pan.

I'll try to keep updating this through the tear down. Anything salvagable will be for sale.

Straight up piston failure. I'm suprised it didn't rear the block up more.

Good lock on a rebuild.

Looks like the SS valve here stayed in tact during this piston failure. I wonder how many piston failures there have been which destroyed the valve especially the OE hollow stem valve? So what came first...............?

My guess is the liner failed first and water entering the combustion chamber is what shattered the piston. It's a shame no matter how it happened... Good luck with the rebuild!

Valve float may have started the complete piston failure.Could have been detonation, could have been a few different things.

Assuming anything at this point is, well...... pointless. Just like the earlier assumptions that the failure was due to a dropped valve.

One of the things I preach around here, and for good reason, is to not assume anything, and take critical measurements. Review your findings.

The loud sonic boom (backfire) heard at the time of the disaster would support a detonation as the likely cause? The pattern of destruction also seems to suggest a powerful overpressure event..

Maybe......but think about the things that can cause detonation, like hot spots on a piston, and how they can get there.....

This is just all speculation. I wouldn't rule anything out but possibly space aliens at this point. I'd have to do a complete tear down and measure/test everything before coming to a conclusion.

Sorry about your engine. Thought maybe some of the front page crowd could help diagnose the problem.
