Engine Blew
Blew my motor last night. Took it into the shop and they told me I have a hole in my block. My question is can I get away just getting a new block and just swap the parts into the new block? Getting a whole new motor installed is running me about $20k. If I get a new block ill be looking at about maybe $5k.

Man! So sorry guy. That really sucks.
Take time to educate yourself on this.
First you will need more than just a new block.
Second it is going to be expensive
Third yes you can rebuild, but it may be cheaper to buy a used engine, it may be better to go with a different engine, or you may want it built right and buy a new prepped engine .
Start reading this forum and educate yourself on all the options....either way you are going to have to spend more than 5K dollars

Trauma goes through the entire engine with a catastrophic failure like that. There won't be enough reusable parts to make it worth your time/money to rebuild it with a new block. If you "cheap-seat" it you might be in for another blown engine. As olddragger said your best bet and least expensive way to go is to buy a used engine.
Just curious, had the heads been checked/repaired/replaced for excessive valve guide wear?

looks like another future coffee table. op listen to what was said above, everyone stated the truth. unfortunately looks like your ls7 succumb to the unfortunate exh valve drop. it more than likely wiped out a cyl head, block, a rod and piston, and what ever was damaged from the shrapnel distributed throughout the engine. best bet is to buy a used long block and pull the heads to have them fixed before it goes in. Thats why its important to do your research on a vehicle, to know its flaws and weaknesses, before you jump in head first.
Kinda pricey but here is one that is already fixed

There are lots of used motors floating around on the forum and on Ebay for 10k and under. Just make sure you pull the heads and send them out to American heritage to have them fixed so you don't have to go through this again.

To the OP, it looks like you just recently bought this car, traded up from a C5, yes?
I assume you do not know the service history? We are all speculating (and most likely accurately so) that the guides in these heads are stock, and worn way past the service limit, and this caused the exhaust valve to fail.
What a way to start off your C6 Z ownership experience..
There are several new Z members that have joined recently, they should read this thread with great interest.
If you do know the service history, please share. And if you could pull a valve cover off and wiggle a few valves for us, that would be educational as well.
I know "meanjoe" couldn't give his built spare motor away - maybe he is still interested in selling.
Good luck.

There are less expensive and better alternatives to a stock crate motor from GM. Not cheap by any stretch, but certainly less expensive alternatives out there.

128 lbs heavier and the crank won't work with our dry sump system (wet sump only). I wouldn't touch this engine at all for a Z06. If a concern, it would be a resale killer.

If resale isn't a concern, I'd throw in a crate LS3 and an Eforce if I simply could not afford another LS7 for the car. But for me, that would be the very last resort...i.e. as opposed to selling the car as is.

Too bad you weren't reading this forum a long while back...........

I know we want to be quick to say valves, but it is possible there are other factors at play here.
Either way...definitely do some research because there are many options out there. Many engine's show up on ebay. Katech has even put a few up there in the past. Just know that there is a good chance the oiling system (lines and tank) will likely need to be replaced because of debris.
