Default Michelin PSS tires and traction, or lack of it.........

My recently bought, and therefore new to me, 2007 Z06 is still impressing me. The previous owner put Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires in the stock size all around. The rear tires are date coded 0515 so they're fairly new. I have quickly learned that full throttle anywhere in 1st is hopeless traction wise, and 2nd gear the rear end does a happy dance back and forth under full throttle. 325/30 ZR19 rears. Full concentration driving in 1st & 2nd, huh?

Normal. It's not the tires fault, lol.

I'm not sure what temps have been like in your region lately but cool or cold temps make it very hard to get traction at this power level. Just be careful, especially when applying throttle coming out of corners.

50's & 60's temps lately here I the Vegas/Henderson area.

ratomicZ06, That's what I'm thinkin. Lack of traction got me yesterday, a late model Audi S4 was on the inside of a two lane left turn on ramp and when the light turned green he scooted, so I thought..........well, ok. Had to go a bit farther than him due to being in the outside lane and on exit I got too frisky and broke the tires loose. He got ahead and when the two lanes merged I had caught up to his back bumper and when we entered the freeway, all lanes were open so by then we were doing 65 and at the top of 2nd then shifted to 3rd I let er eat. when I backed off and he caught up, he gave me an appreciative wave and thumbs up.

Same tires but 345 here. Will get zero traction in 1st or second under about 70 degrees. If you get the tires nice and hot they will do better but still not great if road temps are under 60-70. Wait until summer, they should hook much better.

Also not so good at the 1/4 and 1/8 mile track. Ask me how I know. Look up "MPSS death wobble" -- it appears some (not all) MPSS allow the car to shake side to side on hard acceleration. Supposedly happens on other cars too. This car is a handful to begin with. I am not going back to the track until I get a new set of rear tires. The thing is, I hear reported that MPSS are essentially the best all around tire for the C6Z for daily driving, which is over 99% of what I do so...

Honestly the cars I have driven lately with MPSS did not hook up very well at all. Granted I did not check dates on the tires so I can't say how a fresh set would feel. I can say that my Bridgestones are at least 2 years old and hook much better then the Michelins.(although no street tires will on ~60 degrees or less days) I am very impressed with the Bridgestones and would recommend them.

What Bridgestones are you using on your Z?

Potenzas. They are relatively quiet on the highway as well.

In my experience (as well as others from different parts of the country) the LV/Henderson roads have absolutely zero traction. I can't quote what is different about the asphalt used there but I moved myself and my 5 cars there from NCal in 03 (leaving a couple of years later) and none of my cars could get any traction ever. Once I removed to Az the traction returned. I am now back in SCal in again the roads provide normal traction. But even my 23 year old mild 383 A4 Camaro would weave its way forward with spinning tires at part throttle in LV and that was with 330 rwhp. You have much more power than that.

I had the Potenza on my 07Z and they hooked up very well. I now have a2011 with the pss's and have noticed they seem "tacky" tossing up sand and gravel much more than the Potenza. Another thing I have noticed the front end seems to "skip" when I turn sharp, has anyone else experienced this or just my Z? Soon as I get to my "test strip" I'll let you know how they compare in a straight line.

I had mine out today to give it a car wash, temp was mid 50's here in West Texas. No traction under anything but part throttle. It's a different tire when the weather warms up.

I have the same issues with my mpss, I drive 5mph through the work parking lot due to the amount of gravel getting tossed up on the car, and i can also feel the front end hop when i do low speed sharp turns.

Best thing is the same tire but in a 345/30-19 They are a big improvement. The only better tire I ever had was the Michelin Cup tire in the same size. Problem is you'll only get about 5K miles out of them.
Good luck!

The Pirelli PSS in size 345/30-19 works on the stock width rear rim?

Yes they fit, yes they look awesome, no they don't hold power (and I am basically stock, ARH longtubes and KNN intake)...
