Default How much brake pad left?

This is the best picture I could get without

taking the calipers off. Any idea how much brake life I have left? Stock pads and about 1/8" between part arrow is pointing to (wear indicator?) and rotor. 7,000 miles, aggressive driving.

Your done, replace now before you screw up the rotors

the pads taper wear and wear more on the inner part of the pad nearest the hub.

True

My stock pads had the backing plate that did not cover all of the brake pad, only the upper half.

Funny the posiquiet pads covered almost 3/4 for more even wear. Whether they do or not will be seen.

What kind of driving do you do, what use, what are your priorities? Some want low dust, others no squeal, others the strongest braking. If you go thru pads as quickly as I think you do (7K on OEM pads for street is very hard, but at the trak I wnet thru 1/3rd of the OEM pads a day in the front), the Carbotech 1321's do well on dust and have good retardation for a street pad. They are available in both padlets and single (2 per caliper) pads.

If you like low dust and don't mind losing a little braking the Duralast Ceramic pads work well. If you want greater braking, then you will likely need a pad that dusts heavier and has more squeal. Street pads are not suited to track work and vice versa. Some can get away with a pad that works on the street and at autocrosses.

For street use if you want a quality aftermarket pad I recommend the Carbotech 1521 pad if you want something more aggressive Carbotech has many other compounds to meet your needs http://ctbrakes.com/brake-compounds2.asp .

The Carbotech 1521 is a low dust pad that is rotor friendly and performs like OEM if not better under thresh hold braking and last longer. 100% non-corrosive dust will not harm your paint or wheels. This pad also contains NRS technology. Carbotech uses NRS technology on all C4, C5, C6 & C7 front and rear brake pads.

Here is a link to explain further what NRS technology is exactly: http://www.nrsbrakes.com

If interested let me know I will be happy to help you.

Carbotech™ Bobcat 1521™ The Carbotech Bobcat 1521™ is our high performance street compound that is our most successful compound. The Bobcat compound is known for its awesome release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. Like our AX™ & XP™ line of compounds, Bobcat 1521™ is a Ceramic based friction material offering minimal rotor damage and non-corrosive dust. Bobcat 1521™ offers outstanding performance, even when cold, low dusting and low noise with an excellent initial bite. This compound’s virtually perfect linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Bobcat 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 900°F. Bobcat 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle, police cruiser. The Bobcat 1521™ compound has been found to last two-three times longer than OE pads you can purchase at a dealership or national retailer. That’s one of the beauties of Carbotech Ceramic brake compounds. Bobcat 1521™ is NOT recommended for any track use.

Adam above is a good source, that's where I got mine and I did mean 1521's.

I use pads from Adam as well, with that much wear you might want to measure the rotor thickness. Mine were right on the limit replaced with pads.

Ordered the 1521s for the front from Adam! I'll look on how to measure the rotors unless someone wants to chime in. There is a very tiny lip on the outer portion of the front rotors where the brake pads do not come in contact with.

Tiny lip is disc high point when new, recessed worn away.

Just did brakes in March @44K on my '08.
Trusted wrench said 40-42K for Z06 front brakes about normal from what he's seen. Said I drive lightly, he said it doesn't matter.
Was advised front discs needed replacing, also.
Running fingernail across disc revealed all manner of light grooves. Back pads & discs just fine. Will do 'em March '17.

FWIW used OEM pads/discs and yes, dusting like it were new but does stop smartly. You need carbon.

I can't follow your grammar. You were advised you need new discs and next sentence you say pads and discs are fine?? I didn't get much of anything out of your post...

Got the front pads changed to the Carbotech 1521s! Thanks to Adam and all. After I realized to take the aluminum brake pad cage out of the caliper before installing the new single piece pad it went smoothly. Rotor thickness was good at approx. 31.75mm on each side-at the outer lip of the rotor it read 32.15mm.

Thanks, Jesse

Adam

How thick are your Bobcat pads?

And do you know the well kept secret as to how thick the OEM pads are?

With an 1/8 inch (.125) between the squealer and the rotor you should have plenty of pad life left. A new pad is only .570 thick and the recommended change out thickness is 2/32 (.0625). However, those padlets taper and you can't always tell their minimum thickness by looking at the wear sensor or by pulling the wheel and looking from the top of the caliper. Pull the wheel and the caliper and inspect the pads for taper. Since they taper based on their position in the caliper you can extend the life of the pads by swapping them around in the caliper to compensate for the taper.

... and the rears can be moved to the front, so you'd have 4 good rears and the best of the front 12 in the front and the most worn moved to the rear, if you want to maximize pad use.

OEM pads with a good amount of life left. Oh well. 7.5-8mm at the smaller tapered edge and around 9mm on the larger side, on average.
