I'm amazed that Kentucky has a road long enough and straight enough to get up to 196 mph.
The fastest I have gone is about 121 somewhere between Flagstaff and Albuquerque. The front end of my 1997 C5 felt a bit light so I decided to slow down.

144 in a 70
I paid a little over 300 for my ticket in south Texas. Lucky he clocked me when I was slowing down. I got to 186 and slowed down because I got scared I might blow a tire. In my 08 c6.

Clif, I have to agree with you. Yes, we all have cars that can go extremely fast, but there is a time and a PLACE for that. Doing that kind of speed on a public road endangers everyone. We make fun of Mustang owners for spinning out of control, but we praise this? I have seen too many things happen that were out of the control of the driver to condone doing this. That's why there are track days. I used to be a lead foot on the highway years ago, but, thankfully, I survived.

There are lot of speeding tales, some might be true more questionable. In the mid 60’s there 409’s, 426’s, 427’s just name the brands and horse power. “I was clocked by radar at over 130, 145”, etc, maybe they did, but I had two, actually three mis-happens with the Texas DPS all on I 45 N of Houston during that period. (Took a while to learn) I was attending college 70 miles North of H. town and working for a Chevy dealer about 30 miles South of Houston on weekends and ½ day Friday. I usually drove pretty fast, sometimes more than that. I had a ’59 C-1 those days, with everything I could give it for the period (HP Chevy parts were cheap at the dealer). One afternoon on my way to work as I approached a tree line section of I 45 and a gradual curve There was a DPS officer on the side of the road, “ OH S… I did not try to hit the brakes, just put it in neutral and went by him slowing down to a stop a little beyond him. “ Do you have any idea how fast you were going?´ “ “Nope, how fast was I?” He escorted me back to his car, he pointed to the radar, the indicator was pegged a little past 100 mph. That put an end to the speeding bragging of all the new high HP College kids cars. All The radars in the state at that time were analog and only registered 100mph….none were digital and were not capable of indicating over 100mph. By the way,100+ in a 70 zone, the cost was $250+$20 court cost.& the same six months later.

Burning Brakes
One of those stories.... DPS and 114 west of the DFW Airport
Well I'll give the correct perspective on what I got away with..
Years ago I had a '79 Z28 with a stroked forged motor built by a friend whose father built NRHA engines, at 530 HP, it had a 200 nitrous shot; and was good for 730 hp...the rear end was running 3.77's..
One day in 1983 or so; long before HWY 114 west of the DFW airport was populated I decided to top her out as I headed towards Roanoke TX and the Trophy Club. The car would do a 126 quarter, and a 137 half mile, but nope I had to try and go 140; so after a mile more 138, a mile more 139... Lo and behold I saw a Texas DPS troopers Mars Bar..hitting my brakes so hard I put a flatted a spot on my Kelly Superchargers...
My first question to him?
Am I going to jail..."No", he said, adding "What have you got in that car it sounded like a jet going by?? Meanwhile it sat over there rumbling and shaking with a cam and lumpy idle, spitting raw gas. He looked under hood, admiring the engine and the aeroquip fittings and SS braided hoses..really the car could have been in a magazine , the engine looked so good.
After 15 minutes of jaw jacking I asked if he could see his way clear to give me a pass; but the bad news was he said had no discretion at 99+ mph. But he was a car guy.
Now the bad news... the ticket cost me $430 and the judge threatened me with jail. The act threw me into at high risk insurance pool. I was 27 years old and my insurance for the next 5 years cost me $2500.00 per year, about $1800 to $1900 more per year than I was paying..so the shenanigan ended up costing me something like $10,000. That part of my adventure wasn't so fun...
Which is why on the highway I obey the law but will admit to loving the ability to accelerate to speed in 1st and 2nd on the on ramps...
I can't even imagine what a ticket like that would cost you today....but I'm certain you'd be spending a night in jail....
A funny anecdotal comment is last year my brother asked us to eat at Babes, a restaurant near HWY 114 and Roanoke; the area has grown up with businesses and big homes... After eating we came out and I had this funny feeling as I was very near the 114 and 377 (north to Denton) intersection. Sure enough we could look look down to exactly the same area where I got pulled over..it was deja vu.

Smile.....760 is in my country (switzerland) not so much - but indeed it is more than enough. I got now my bill for a little speeding of 28mph over the limit with my C7.... I got a 12'000 Swiss Francs penalty, a 3'800,- fee and i'm not allowed to drive for 4 month..... this is very sick

This is my best ticket story.....
many years ago, when I as a kid I had a Turbo 300ZX. One sunny afternoon, a few blocks from my house, headed in one direction I thought I saw a girl I was going out with heading in the opposite direction. I busted a u-turn & accelerated to catch up, when I see a Metro Dade cop coming out of one of the side streets. Of course I lay off the throttle & he catches up to me & turn on his lights. I was in the center turn lane of a pretty busy street & I signaled to him that I was going to turn there & pull over, which is what I did.
Mind you when I turned & stopped I was literally 2 blocks from my house.....you could actually see my house from there. Anyways, he says over the loudspeaker "take out you drivers license, registration & proof of insurance.....& while you're at it take out your pilots license too"
He walks up & asks me how many tickets I had, to which I said none (was true). He says "oh, so they've never caught you." & I respond "no sir, I really don't speed much, but hat happened was that I thought I saw my girlfriend heading south & I turned around to see if I could catch her". He thinks for a second & says "you have a picture of her?" & as luck would so have it she had just given me a picture the week before of her in a bikini where she looked smokin'!!
I say "yes sir, I do" & take out the photo & hand it to him. He looks at it for a few seconds & says "yeah, ok, I'd do 75 to catch her" Hands it back to me & tells me to have a nice day.

I'm just waiting for the day that they start mailing out tickets to people because if you passed Toll Plaza A at a certain time & then passed Toll Plaza B x amount of time later, then it's very easy to calculate your speed.
say it's exactly 60 miles from point A to point B.....should take you exactly an hour if you're doing the legal 60mph. But if you get to point B in 45min, well then you were speeding, my friend.

I'm pretty sure in some of the northern states they're already measuring those times...Illinois??
My personal favorite ilm is this classic from 1976, as would be available through vimeo. It fooled me back then.
https://vimeo.com/34039780
its the infamous 6.9 Mercedes with the camera on its front bumper doing a sound dubbed Ferrari 275 GTB run through Paris at dawn...
C'était un rendez-vous...the street racing film that started it all.

Down here, in Florida, they're moving all the highways to Open Road Tolling (ORT), which forces you to buy a Sunpass so that you don't have to stop to pay tolls.

Of course the ****** deny it is revenue raising even when the speed may be just a couple of Km/H over the limit.
"It is all designed for your own safety." Yeah right!!

I had a friend who had a shop and worked on Porches. He had a customer that ran his 911 up to 160 on the freeway at 2 am and they got him. Ended up costing him $6500 by the time it was all done, with being arrested and car impounded.

it depends on the cop
Two weeks after I recieved my ticket, my gf hit a deer about 1/4 mile from where I recieved my citation of 144 in a 70. The county sheriff deputy came to respond and I did to because my gf called me scared that she hit a deer. She was ok just shook up by the incident.I parked away from the scene and off the highway where my car could barely be seen, so it wasn't in the way. The state trooper who gave me the ticket also arrived since it was a state highway under his jurisdiction. When he saw me he laughed and said to the deputy, I just gave this guy a ticket for 144 here two weeks ago. The county deputy looked at me all mean mugged and said he would have arrested me. The county deputy never looked at me normal again the whole time we where there. Prior to his arrival, he was all cool with me. So it all depends on the cop, because the county deputy obviously would have arrested me.

My last speeding ticket was something like 6 years ago, 60 in a 45 in my acura, I was just hurrying back to class after dropping my girlfriend off, but even though I knew there was a motorcycle cop that hid by the bridge on the way to school it slipped my mind up until the point I passed him. Mistakes were made.
I don't know what my biggest ticket would have been, but I once flew by a cop going flat out shortly after buying my GSXR-750. I was at an indicated 182 going slightly downhill, completely maxed out. Saw the lights briefly flick on way up the road before going back off. I kept going for a little bit to make sure I had some distance, then just about coasted down the next exit to sit down at a gas station till I stopped shaking.
I've never tried to top out my bike or anything else since.
