Default Broken Clutch Pedal Spring

I know this has been covered in the past and is why I knew what was going on last week when my clutch pedal was making a metallic sound when returning to upright position. Then the sound stopped. Today I found this on the floor below the pedal. Clutch seems to be working fine. My knee is a little screwed up from tennis so I may not be able to notice the difference in function. I have warranty so will get if fixed soon.

Well maybe I will leave it off. Right now I'm driving to work with ice packs on my left knee so hard to tell which way I will like it.

Its just there to help depress the clutch pedal, right?

Yes. When I played with removing it on my C5, I hated the way it made the engagement feel like it was right at the top of the stroke.

It went back on that afternoon.

Actually it is a dual purpose spring and also helps to return the clutch pedal to the full up position. Since you still have a warranty, I've heard that GM may deny a warranty claim if you don't have this spring installed and your clutch goes out.

Never had any issues with clutch action before it broke so I will be getting it replaced for sure. And soon.

Got my spring replaced and like the feel much better and don't have to worry about any possible negative developments.

I used a C5 spring. Pedal feels more progressive and a bit softer overall. Doesn't kick out at you like the C6 Spring did. I'll never go back to the C6 spring again.

Mine just broke at 29k miles. $9 and 5 min of work and it's as good as new.

To put it in, put each side in first and then swing the spring up out of the way. Then put the pedal on the floor and simply swing spring down into place. Takes two seconds after you've done it once.

Also, I've seen the document from gm saying this is a dual purpose spring but after replacing it and checking things out I'm quite confident it only assists the pedal in the down position. I'm stumped why they say that. It seems like risk they mention would be higher WITH the spring. Anyone have more info on this? Lots of conflicting opinions out there.

I might be wrong but I think it's there to ensure full clutch disengagement. Something about the piston sticking in the master cylinder.

That's what they say but I have a hard time understanding how that's correct. Was hoping someone knew for sure.

The spring is there from the factory to ensure the pedal returns fully and contacts the cruise control switch.
The spring is also there to keep GM warranty's down from those that may "ride" the clutch. As noted above removing the spring removes the free play (so to speak) and touching the clutch in any way results in fluid movement resulting in mechanical movement of the clutch pack.
