That being said, I have always hammered a screwdriver through the filter on stubborn ones. Has yet to fail me.

Just a FYI..

I think the manual states the tightening torque on the filter is ~ 20 Ft lbs.. You aren't going to get that off by hand..

I need a good filter wrench to get mine off..

Try a long screwdriver at the base of the filter and whack it with a hammer. BTW- the filter shown is wrong for a Z.

My feeling is the filter should never be that tight unless it was cross threaded on (I hope it's not the case though).

Once u start a filter on the holder it should spin on with no resistance until the gasket contacts the base.
The LS7 has always required a 48 series oil filter. What are the chances the dealership forced an older 44/46 series oil filter onto the threads?? Thread pitch is different between the 48 series and 44/46 series. Should not have been able to do it but who knows if you have an idiot doing the work??

Channel locks if that doesn't work pound a screw driver through it, either one should get it off. Make sure you are going the right way. One reason I like the K&N filters they have a stamped nut welded on the bottom and you can use a socket if it is to tight.

Yes, I am turning it the right way - counter clockwise. ( I know you have to ask )

I totally sympathize with this problem. I think I have long term shoulder damage from lying under my car all day begging that filter to turn on its axis.

Best success for me, nylon cap style filter-wrench with a rubber lining fabricated from a kitchen jar opener.

I like the screwdriver through it and torque. In fact, the manufacturers should sell one that comes with a hole through it for that purpose.

Hope it gets resolved nicely for you.

I think the worse-case scenario is the casing rips from the base, leaving you no leverage on the base, and you have to pull the case from the base and apply leverage directly on the back-side of the base (as others have suggested, via a punch or chisel).

Good luck, that's a mess you have there.

Thanks everyone for your ideas and support. I might not get a chance to work on it again until Thursday at the earliest, more likely Saturday, but I'll post my results.

At least I have the advantage of working with the car on a lift so I can work comfortably under it, and I can store it up out of the way if I haven't completed the work.

Before the outside of it is illegible, try to read what filter number it is. With the blue coating, it would appear to be an AC Delco. Bad news if it is a PF44 or PF46.

As s previously mentioned, you may just have to replace the oil filter housing altogether if the threads got screwed up, or if you cant get that filter off. Although, I never looked under my car to see what that would involve. While this is a pain in the ***, its hopefully not the end of the world.

From the pic the OP posted if you were to remove the L side cat that would give you enough room to try to get the mangled filter off (if all else fails).

Yes, it sucks to have to do that but at least you have a lift and removing the cat isn't that bad of a job when you can stand under the car to do it.

I had this exact same problem with a new Chevy van years ago...first oil change. I tried to use the screwdriver thru the can method and all it did was rip off the can. I ended up using an air hammer on the base. It was more of an air chisel than a hammer. It actually cut the base between a couple of the holes in the holes before it finally came off.
Let us know how it works out.

Stealerships don't typically put engine builders on oil changes. The shleps do that work. Hence, shlep type mistakes.

Exactly and Vettes scare some and they fear the filter coming off and tighten it a little more then a regular beater.

Once off, I would take that mangled mess back to the dealership and rip them a new one (especially if the filter turns out to be a 44 or 46 series). Free of charge oil filter block and lifetime oil changes if you dared to let them touch it again. Lube tech needs to be fired for gross stupidity.

Hmm, I've always just hand tightened oil filters on all my vehicles forever. Never had a leak or an issue. Once the pressure comes up in the car after the oil change that filter tightens even more (thus why it always takes more force to get it off than you used to put it on). Granted, I twist pretty hard by hand, so it might get close to the GM recommended 18 foot pounds...
