picking up an 08 z06, kind of nervous
I've done a fair amount of research about the valve guide issue and still have some un answered questions. An 08 with 22k miles, that hasn't had the valve guide issue addressed. Would you be nervous driving it 650 miles home? I plan on pulling the heads as soon as I get it home. Not quite sure what to do at this point....

I think I would listen very carefully to the engine while it was running to see if I could hear any valve train noise. You are going to hear some noise, but its usually the fuel injectors. If there is no noise that sounds obvious, I would drive it. As soon as I could, I would get them wiggle tested at least. Good luck. Let us know.
I bought mine with 39k and drove it 250 miles home, then drove it for 6 months before I had mine done.

Wow, sucks we have to have this conversation... could you come up with the couple hundred dollars to have it brought to you. I would try to justify it by the money to rent a car or fly and the hotel overnight, and the food and gas you would use to make myself feel better. I'm glad you did research and it's not an Internet thing. Not sure where you're at and where the car is but west coast to east coast is abouth $1000.00 or so, and Florida to the north east is around $600.00. It sounds like you less than both of those but it comes down to point A to point B. Congrats on the Z, it would just be heartbreaking, however small the odds are, that is would do the drop thing along the way... Good Luck

Take red coil covers off and listen for loud type writer tappity taps. If its bad the noise stands out. Drive it home easily and do a wiggle test on all 16 valves. Take it from there.

My thoughts are you'll be ok. However Peace of mind would be to work a deal with the seller that if you don't make it home, there is no sale. If its a dealer, that kind of deal may be possible.
Concerning the advice of other to listen to the engine, I have owned several Z's and every one of them made some valve train noise. So don't let a little noise bother you. if the car has headers, the noise will be more pronounced. Not to worry, if no noise good, If a little noise, still ok.

I just picked up my 08C6Z w 22K on it about 6 weeks ago..... Drove it to OKC from Dallas last weekend... 90mph in 6th @ 2K rpm on the interstate. averaged 25-32mpg 348 miles on a tank of fuel before filling up again. That is the first road trip I have taken in it. I don't do that often. But I will say that it drove, rode SO NICE that I simply cannot believe that it took me so long to sell my C5Z and pick one of these up. Don't live in fear, enjoy the car... Just have a plan to have the heads fixed or at a minimum do the "wiggle" test as others have stated. My plan is to pick up a pair of WCCH next month. Between now and then I probably won't put 200 mi on my Z as I have other cars to drive. I most certainly won't be beating on it. They are great cars!!! for the record, my LS7 is not noisy at all... By this time next month my car will be a different animal altogether and "then" I can drive it as it was meant to be driven. Congrats on your Z.....

Enjoy it. LS7's have blown up (SUPER low percentage) with orginal heads, fixed heads, 100 miles, 50,000 miles. If it's destined to go, it's gonna go. My advice: YOLO. I drove mine around for many happy miles before I decided to have the heads addressed. And I only did it because I could afford to, and it was down for the winter anyway. Again, just enjoy it!

Just drive it...don't beat on it and redline the thing. But if you're that uneasy about it, then just have it transported...as mentioned above, its not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. Its really up to you...

Between 2006-2013 GM manufacturered and sold 30,548 LS7 equipped Z06's and 427's.. how many have lost their engines between 2006-2017? No one knows for sure, but the odds are definitely in your favor of making it home without a valve dropping..
