Wes--
As a retirement job after running some companies I sold BMWs and MINIs for a half dozen years at a high quality dealer; I am now fully retired. So I am familiar with your dilemma. But just looking at a couple of your posts I conclude that (1) you will undoubtedly sell this car and make a fair profit even with the discount, (2) your not charging over list and not charging extra dealership fees are commendable policies (our dealership also prohibited selling over list and our minimal fees were controlled by law), and (3) your straightforward and fair approach will win you a lot of converts and supporters on this forum and others.
FYI, in Illinois we would always take deposits on ordered cars, but what many customers did not know is that there is a state law that prevents a dealer from keeping a deposit unless the car transaction is consummated and the car is driven off the lot (unless in the rare instance a customer signed a statement that the deposit was not refundable on any very special cars). As a result we always returned deposits with a smile if people had to cancel. In any event good public relations. So you are not really losing out for not requiring a deposit. Personally, as a purchaser I would prefer to provide a deposit as legal consideration to hold a dealer contractually responsible for its agreement when ordering a car. But in sum, I expect that anyone dealing with you will be a happy customer. --Bob
