If this thing is done right, I predict it will cannibalize a lot of Vette sales to the older guys who now buy loaded Vettes with automatic trannies...that's a LOT of the current Vette demographic...
Now if the new Vette is edgier and more European (likely) could that be "problem solved?"
Need Blue Ox and other marketing pros on here to opine....

Earlier, when GM wanted some tax breaks from the state of KY, they promised a large capital investment, a larger work force and a second car line. Could be this is the second car line and the explaination for the larger than necessay for Corvette capital investment and the larger thna necessarey for Corvette work force. Into the C& in 2013, and the Cad in 2014?

Both of these theories make a whole lotta sense to me.

I may have put it together...
With the Caddy concept looking like it's built on the C7, I think I have something figured out. They added on to the plant and said they were planning to add a 2nd car line. That's the Caddy. All the constant complaints about how the Corvette should be sold by Cadillac dealers, and older buyers buying loaded auto Corvettes, while there are lots of buyers decrying the need for big, expensive option packages making for a heavier and more complex and expensive Corvette. Why not cater to BOTH sides? A fully tricked out, high tech high performance (V type) Caddy and a more elemental, purer performance oriented Corvette which can be sold at a lower price point.
Now, about the apparent extra couple inches of wheelbase. NOT a 2+2,
the extra space is for a retractable hardtop!. The Corvette sticks to a fabric ragtop.
Thus pleasing both kinds of buyers and selling more cars building off the C7 platform. Win, Win!
Now, was this Ed Welburn's idea? He may be a genius.

From the 70's to a few years ago the MB SL was an incredibly successful car . I think the latest SL is about 100,000 and for 2013 not as pretty as the last generation. Cadillac designs are getting prettier by the day and if they can make it truly beautiful for around 75,000 , it may just be their time in the sun.
