Will the Z06 Die with the C6?
#42
Several of the GM division heads were at VIR for the NCM track event. They each spoke of the valuable input received from those of us that track our vettes. Some stories were told of instances of development changes due to track experiences. This was only a couple of months ago, so, in answer to the question will GM drop the Z06? Maybe in name only but you can bet your sweet bibby that a track version will be available.
I think the ZR1 will be for those people who want a car that will contend with the top 5 best performance cars in the world.

That's exactly how I felt when the GS came out.... I felt cheated by GM.... I thought the zo6 was exclusive in its performance and looks......now, it's just another corvette.......

You better go buy a GT-R since that's closer to your price point with some exclusivity. Ya might want to think twice about just how bullet-proof that one is though.
Or just go for the gusto and solve your problem with a Ferrari 458.

I'm going to agree with many posters: I think the Corvette will have 3 "tiers" instead of the current 4 tier system.
TIER 1
Base Coupe - better performance than current base, but not near Z06. I guess it will have a performance package option like the Z51. Probably around 470 HP
TIER 2
Grand Sport / Z06 / Z07 / Stingray / pick your name - Perhaps some more aggressive styling on select body panels, perhaps the same engine (maybe slightly larger) but tuned for more power, larger exhaust, stiffer shocks / leaf spring, bigger brakes, etc. This should exceed the performance of the current Z06. I'd guess HP to be around 565 (the figure has to exceed ZL1) - most people don't know or care about power to weight ratio.
TIER 3
ZR1 - Competitor to the Viper. This war has been going on since Viper's birth. Should have 650+ HP (b/c Viper has stated 640), turbo / super charged, lots of carbon fiber, big price tag. And in reality, we all have Viper to thank for making Corvette up its ante.
My question is if they're going to release a DCT, especially with the GS / Z06 equivalent, or stick with the A6. My bet is A6. But the ZR1 will only come in manual.

Where do you get that idea?
The Corvette has always had its 'entry' model and options were available to go rather far upstream.
If you actually believe the sub $50,000 MSRP (nearer $40K discounted) C6 with a top speed of 190 MPH, 0-60 in 4.3, 0-100 in 9.3, 60-0 in 120' or so, 12.5 @ 117 in the quarter, excellent fuel mileage, low maintenance and insurance costs, etc. is dragging down the Corvette's prestige, I question your thinking.
And why would GM eliminate a model that satisfies a lot of buyers?

Yes there will. I believe that the base car will match or come very close to the performance of the current C6 ZO6 while also being more civil on the street.

Damn man, how much more civil do you expect a sports car to be?

More civil on the street? My Z06 idles smooth as a baby's butt at 620 RPM. I can drive in second or third gear at 900 RPM in very heavy traffic, stop light to stop light, without a single stutter. I can cruise all day long at 1500-1600 RPM in 6th gear on the highway and get 28-29 measured MPG. I can drive my Z06 860 miles in one day, only stopping for gas, rest room, and meals. And I'm 70 years old, with four heart attacks with a five graft open heart surgery under my belt, a cancer survior, and I have neuropathy in my feet. Just think what a young kid of 40 with no health problems could do in a Z06.
