This probly sounds crazy but could the reason for the shape of the tail lights be to look like the wing tips of a Stingray?
They were also on the Transformers Stingray Vette...

Probably a case of a form massaged a little to follow function, but I wouldn't be surprised if you were correct. Designers sometimes draw inspiration from the strangest places.
A wing..or maybe even an "angry" stingray's eye showing up in the lighted portion of a taillight

A StingRay has "Wing tips"?
Before the grammar police show up, it's "Wing Tips" not the shoe style "Wingtips"

It's entirely possible. I'm hoping those are air extraction vents that serve a function, it definitely seems like they attempted to style them similar to the Centennial Concept.
And those sting ray eyes are obviously oval C5 tail lights

That is a very interesting observation! I'm an ocean and saltwater aquarium fanatic and never noticed that. After you pointed it out, I can certainly see why you would say that. Could something "fishy" be going on with these styling cues?? One can only wonder!
