Did GM Comment As To Why The C7 Is So Heavy?
#41
That article is way off base
The Z07 package adds
mag ride............3#
Wheels/tires.....14#
rocker panels......2#
Then subtract
carbon ceramic brakes.....7.5#.
CF hood.......................11.5#
There are no other changes.
take the base Z06 curb weight of 3199 pounds and subtract 19# and then add 19#and what weight do you come up with?
These numbers come from the 2010 Bash courtesy of Kerbeck using data supplied by GM.
Even if you remove the carbon fiber rocker panels and the carbon fiber hood, you only add 13.5 pounds of weight to the Z06.

Edmunds tested a 2012 Z06 with Z07 pkg with a weight of 3250 in a test vs a GTR. It seems that no weight is actual. Also maybe the 2010 model is lighter than the 2012. Seems to be a lot of various weights out there.

Why does my new C6 Convertible bother you so much? And again you own what kind of Corvette?

Did they actually weigh the car? Car and Driver, Motor Trend and Road and Track all weigh the test cars on scales. they all have the C6 Z06 Z07 coming in at around 3300lbs.

It didn't state if it did. I guess I will have to take Joes info with a grain of salt... If you know what I mean.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this. The weight increase used to be largely attributed to the improved sound insulation. I have no idea if that's correct, but it makes sense to me.

Ugh. Its a pig and the price is a bit high for now. Glad I bought my 2013 1LT at a substantial discount. Yes the new C7 is super cool but hp/weight is not as good as a 2013 1LT.

I understand weight is important but...
200 lbs or so between the base C6 vs the C7 is not the end of the world like most would have it seen. You'd think that everyone here are professional race drivers the way weight is being debated.
Personally, I understand why GM did what they did, adding weight to aid structural rigidity. The C6, while incredibly capable, was hard and scary to drive fast (unless you are a VERY capable driver). I think what we will see (once road tests are published) is that the C7 corvette will be a far better handling car, especially at the limit. The handling characteristics will define the C7 more than any other characteristic.
I am confident this will be the first corvette that will rival the driving/steering feel of a Porsche 911.
This was at the top of my wish list for the C7 and I bet GM addressed it. Still wishing the exterior design would have been more pleasing to my eyes...

90 LB? A pig?
I wonder which car will destroy the other at the track?

For all the improvements the C7 is getting over the C6 I hardly think 90 lbs. is something to bitch about. Then again this is the Corvette Forum so I guess it's to be expected.

Its not bitching. It is honest disappointment. Why tout the aluminum frame if weight doesn't matter? They obviously screwed the pooch on vehicle weight and there are a zillions regulations behind why.

Where is all the outrage over the C6 gaining weight nearly every year of production?? Why is it such a big deal now? Reason is its just another chance to bitch about the C7.....

But I figure I'll wait for some actual performance results first before passing final judgement. I'm very interested to see how they've improved the steering feel and feedback, an area in which the C6 was lacking.

I've also wondered about that. If this is where the C7 starts in 2014, how much is it going to weigh in say 5 more years? A platform typically get heavier with each passing year until they start over with a clean slate design in the next generation.

I wouldn't be too upset with the GM video teaser, they are doing everything they can to keep weight down.'Remember adding HP is easy these days....shaving weight isn't.

I see most magazines weigh the C6 at over 3300 lbs (R&T has this page will all vettes):
http://www.roadandtrack.com/cm/roada...51ba6b2de4.pdf
GM however says the base C6 weights 3208 no matter what options or trim you get.
So, there is a 100 lb difference in there somewhere.
Now with the C7 GM is saying 3300 lbs. The question I have is: What will we see when a magazine weighs the car? How much will the options change the weight? Will there still be 100 extra pounds in there somewhere, or is the 3300 a bit more accurate than the 3200 they quote for the C6?
I am a little disappointed in the weight of the car (I was estimating 3200-3300, but hoping it would be closer to 3200). Still, it isn't too bad for all the features you are getting. The track performance seems to be excellent as well, so most signs are looking positive IMO.
