Base vs Z51 in straight line performance
Which do you think will be faster in a straight-line? Will the Z51's added weight be outweighed by its advantageous gearing (comparing auto to auto)?

Base... say 100ish pounds lighter
Z51... grippier tires and better gearing
My personal bet is the Z51 with gearing and tires is faster in a straight line but that is COMPLETELY speculation. IMO gearing is more important in acceleration than 100 +/- pounds.

Until we know the weight of the Z51, It's all guessing. Someone going to the 60th at NCM needs to ask one of the engineers there.

I think we need to know that actual weight difference to truly determine this one...I think it might be too close to call though.
I don't think it will be quite that much, but maybe?
I'm guessing only 40-50 pounds lighter.
And I would agree if we were talking about a MAJOR gearing difference, but it's not.
That 100 pounds (if it IS actually a full 100 that is) would do more harm than the few extra (or fewer?) teeth on a few of the transmission cogs can overcome in my opinion.
Now, if it were a change from 3.42s to 4.10s in the rear differential along with the Z51 transmission gearing (manuals) then I would agree that the extra 100 pounds would almost 'disappear'.
Same thing in the automatics, the change from 2.56 to 2.73 would not be enough to overcome a 100 pound weight gain (but it could possibly erase a 40-50 pound one).

I didnt know the Z51 had grippier tires - are the tires not the same between the two?

Z51 tires are a special compound that will likely wear faster, but grip better. The gearing difference with the grippier tires should overcome the weight difference. In any case it will likely be close enough that the drivers skill will determine who wins.

Agreed... it would be measured by very small differences either way.

Z51 will be two car lengths ahead at 60 MPH and 3 car lengths ahead in the traps.

Are the wheel and tires sizes the same on current C6 Z51 and base cars? I'm not sure.
I doubt the gearing makes a great deal of difference as others have stated so, for me, give me the weight advantage. In our 1/4 mile Challenge, it doesn't appear the Z51s have an advantage. In that thread, the GS bone stock times are considerable slower then the best non GS cars?????

Maybe it will depend on the drivers skill - and weight. + 50 lbs Z51 or - 50 lbs lighter driver?

The e differential, gearing and the optional MRC should help to make the z51 a tick faster..
