Even the steering wheel has to come off.!!!

I'd be afraid of breaking tabs, clips and tearing out holes.

You'd have to bag and tag all the screws and hardware.

Makes me wonder if you had some warranty repair where the dealer tech needed to take this all apart. I would bet any money, he would not put things back properly and toss a bunch of screws and what-not.

Default truly humbled

I am simply in awe of this DIY. And I think I'm pretty handy with a Dremel.

Moral of the story: If you really have to have the HUD, and wouldn't be doing this yourself, (I wouldn't even try it in a million years) you're better off just ponying up the 2LT.

If it works as intended, you saved a lot of $$. It takes some kind of skill to pull that off. Congrats.

This was a lot of work and the sad thing is I'll probably be doing it again very soon once I figure out the wiring I'm a glutton for punishment.

I'm 32, I bought a base 1LT vette for the soul purpose of tearing it apart and learning about it. The good news is right now theres probably not another person other than those at bowling green that know the internals of the car like I do.

I drove the car for around 9 days before doing this. I planned on doing it 9 monthes ago though

Also......... how long did you drive the car before you considered doing it? I ask because frankly with the stock dash the car has to me a HUD is not really needed. There is so much better information in the dash pod......... HUD is so secondary.

I know I will appreciate it on the track but not on the street.

Excellent job!!!! You should be proud!!!

Steering wheel is very simple. use a small screw driver to release the air bag just like in the c6. Next you'll need to release the air bag wires on the back and removing the grounding wire harness on the air bag.
Once air bag is off you will need to go ahead and release the harness inside. Lastly you'll need a T-45 to remove the center bolt holding the steering wheel on and slide the steering wheel off.
NOTE: Make sure you tape the clock spring in place other wise it can rotate and that can be a pain to reset if you don't know what you're doing.

I wonder if a tear down like that would void the warranty.

Would hate to void the warranty on a first year new model.

only if something didn't work that was done by me. Everything checks out and works fine, actually works better than before tear down.

It was fairly easy to take apart and honestly didn't plan on taking it that far but was going pretty good at trying to get to one part and went on and on and well ended up with the dash out.
