Default Having the windshield replaced tomorrow

I am the first C7 owner for this shop to have his windshield replaced. I am a bit apprehensive to say the least.

Is there anyone at GM who knows how to replace a windshield and could they chime in here...?

Mine took a pretty big hit last week, about the size of a half dollar. The insurance company is coming out tomorrow to try repairing it. The location is center left about 5 inches above the hood. Not really in the field of vision, but I can see it in the periphery.

I was going to have it replaced, but with winter just beginning here in the Northeast. I thought it best to repair it just in case another stone hits it before Spring. (I can't imagine having that conversation with my insurance company) If the repair isn't acceptable, I'll have it replaced early next year.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Don't stress about it. I'm sure you will be just fine. I took my C6 Z06 in a few years ago for a new windshield and everything was perfect.

I would tip the installer before he starts the job, $50 minimum. Mine was returned with not so much as a fingerprint.

BEFORE.....that makes perfectly good sense to me.

I'm going on the dealerships recommendation that these guys are the best. I was told today that I could not drive the vehicle for 4 hours after the install because the windshield had to "set".
Does that sound right?

I don't think there is anything unique about replacing the windshield. Sure it will turn out well. Better the windshield then the hood. My C6 was 2 weeks old and took 2 hits and chips of the windshield in the same trip.

Got a flat tire in the right rear tire the same day I got the windshield crack last week.....not a great day.

4 hours is about right. I am sure the glass guys have replaced C6 windshields so the C7 will be no different.

I have had several windshields replaced on other cars. The windshield actually contributes to the strength and crashworthiness of a modern car, according to the techs, which is why you want the adhesive to cure before driving.

These cars aren't as easy as a "normal" car. You have to remove the weather strip that runs up the a-pillars and across the front which seals the targa. Then you have to remove the a-pillar and cowl trim. The tricky part is getting the a-pillar trim and weather strip to re-seal correctly. Check closely for drips at the bottom of the a-pillars and corner of the targa top when you get it back.

I don't know if this applies to the OP's car, but something I noticed the other day is that the windshields are apparently HUD-specific if you have HUD.

Yeah, even the C5 and C6 had HUD specific SKUs for the glass.

As long as you're not shopping for the cheapest installer I think you will be fine.

they also had to remove the rear view mirror. how do I check for drips there isn't any water. they did remove the top.

they did a good job on the windshield but I have a softball sized black ink mark on my red leather passenger seat which wasn't there before they started. I brought it to the attention of the body shop manager who asked me are you sure it wasn't there before?

I politely replied No it wasn't there before so he said he would order a new seat cover under warranty.

The very first weekend out with my C7, I traveled from our home in Bowling Green KY to a friends house in Norris City, IL. Just crossing into IL, we met a grain semi coming our way on a 2 lane road, that must have thrown a pea-sized pebble at us. (didn't really see it) The sound in the car was deafening; you would have thought that a boulder hit us!

First chance I got, I pulled over to take a look. I located the strike point about 2 inches below the roof. There was a very slight powder spray pattern at the impact zone. I wiped it off, and there was but the faintest spot remaining. I cannot see any hairline cracks, and it has been 3 weeks since, with a wide range in temperatures, so I guess I am lucky this time.

I am getting Clearplex installed the same time as the xpel. About 300 and last 2-3 yrs. have had it on two other cars (911s). Pebbles get thrown up here in the PNW. Stuffed tires, lumber trucks and the like. Helps protect against the spidering that can occur with debris.

Sit in the car and have a buddy run the garden hose over it. Take any spray gun off and just let the water run. Run it over all the roof seams and up and down the a-pillars and around where the door glass seals etc. Inspect for any water getting in. If you find any take it back.
