Why so much dead space in the convertible trunk panel?
I wanted to try and see why the rear interior panel inside the convertible trunk sticks out so much. It came off easily with two thumbscrews. I was surprised to find no good reason for it. Sure, it needs to accommodate the latch mechanism, but other than that, there is a heck of a lot of dead space in there.
Anybody know why they would waste so much space? Do they maybe use the same panel in the coupe and put speakers in there?
Anybody game to make an after-market panel that hugs the contours of the lights and trunk latch a lot better?

I will get some photos later tonight, but it is practically 6 inches of dead space the entire width and height. Except for the inside of the taillights and the latch mechanism, it seems like an added 4 to 6 inches by 12 inches by 50 or 60 inches of volume (maybe more than 2 cu feet) could be reclaimed with a more efficient panel shape that conformed tightly to the interior rear body.

Below are some photos of what I am talking about. I know it is going to bother me every time I wish the trunk was bigger, so I am pretty sure I will be fabricating a new cover.
If I design something, I am wondering if anybody else would be interested enough to help pay for tooling of a new formed part. I suppose I would still need to accommodate the 10th speaker in there for the 2LT and 3LT owners to get enough interest.

Where is the partition latch sensor located? To "disarm", is it open circuit or made/closed?
it's your right side Partition "latch Sensor" disarm that latch?????/
and you can lay that partition flat, and operate your convertable top...
JUST REMEMBER SOFT ITEMS UNDER CONVERT TOP.....

Edit: Just disconnect the pigtail harness from the sensor on the right side partition snap, and top goes up and down without partition in place. As AZvetters said, make sure that you keep your **** out of the way of the top if you do this.
