Default GM: sealant-no, wax-yes. ???

In the Stingray's owner's manual, Section 10, Car Care, they state :

"Application of aftermarket clearcoat sealant/wax materials is not recommended... If necessary, use non-abrasive cleaners that are marked safe for painted surfaces to remove foreign matter. Occasional hand waxing or mild polishing should be done to remove residue from the paint finish."

Is this something new? What about the famous C6 forum debates about Rejex versus Zaino, (both sealants)?

I've asked local car guys and get a blank look, then some mysterious answer about the paint needs to breathe?

It must be somewhat important if Chevy would bother to put this in their owners manual.

I'll seal my car with good stuff the minute I get it home.

They may be referring to the crap dealers sell for $399.....

Clay, polish and seal is the way to do this with any of the 1000 of products that are discussed here.....

By the time a lot of people read that in the Owner's Manual they probably have paid the dealer for a $600 Paint Sealant and Protection Package. That is what the warning is about just that they see it too late.

Thanks for the response, but you say this like GM wants to hurt their dealer for no apparent reason. If someone buys the dealers "lifetime Teflon" coating, the purchaser is actually getting a product, maybe overpriced, but he's getting a product and service. What is it about the sealant that GM says don't use?

My week old Stingray got it's first wax yesterday. The owner's manual swayed me not to use my usual Rejex and I bought some Meguier's wax instead.

Would love to hear more on this.

Everything you want to know is in the Car Care Products section.

That was a big mistake, don't do it again...LOL

There is not much better than Rejex for a car......

Yeah, you're right, I searched under "owners manual sealant" and it has been discussed quite a bit it in Car Care.

They don't seem to know there either. Lot of people said GM said it because they want you to buy their waxes. And GM doesn't want to warranty your finish if you use junk.

But as my direct quote states in the original post, GM said "aftermarket wax" is okay, just not sealant. Hmm.

When I get my C7 in a few weeks I'm going to flat out IGNORE that attorney driven sentence in the Corvette owners and use my Zaino (Clay, Z2 PRO with ZFX additive).

Paint Needs to Breathe

Words mean things, just ask any Lawyer. Floating around on the Internet, and discussed for decades among car enthusiasts is the myth that paint needs to breathe.

Or is it a myth?

thats really weird? I use Adams carnuba wax (in the jar thats like 80 bucks) i think americana.

and I use the adams spray quick sealant on my c5 z06 and my c6 z06...

this concerns me ... does this mean I cant use it on my c7 when I get it ?

you can user any product from the major mfrs you want on a Vette.... it's just base + clear automotive paint like every other car out there.... there is nothing SPECIAL about Vette paint except they've dialed in a lot of Orange peel free of charge....

"...aftermarket clearcoat sealant/wax materials..."

And, here's my take on the above which you quoted from the Owner's Manual. That little "/" line to me means, don't use aftermarket clearcoat sealant OR wax materials.

Why they would say it, I have no idea since it is a normal, base clearcoat painting process and product on the car. I doubt if there is one aftermarket wax or polish company that has said the same thing about the C7. So, I do think there are no worries on using clearcoat sealants, waxes, or polishes.
