Default Speed of gears in Auto

This may seem like a silly question but I am wondering if any of you with the automatic could tell me where the gears end up in MPH. Meaning aprox. how fast will 1st gear take you and 2nd gear.

Basically, I am trying to figure out if I should wait for the 8 speed auto in the 2015. Basically, I would like to wind through gears without going too fast and for this guy that is typically about 55mph. As long as I can shift once and enjoy a little bit of second before hitting 55mph I am happy.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. First time posting to the forum.

Welcome! Attached is a PDF from a spreadsheet I built since I was curious about the announced A8 with 2.41 rear axle in the Z06 trim versus the A6 Z51 with 2.73. Tire revolutions per mile were taken from Michelin data at Tirerack.

Do you have the figures for the Z06 with the optional 2.73 gear?

A lot depends on whether you are talking about a A6 base car or a Z51 as the rear gear ratios are different. The base car A6 will go a little faster(5 MPH in 1st gear) in each gear than the Z51.

You are welcome! Building the spreadsheet gave me something to do while I was on hold with Tektronix technical support last week

There is a previously posted spread sheet with all the numbers for 2.73 vs 2.56 rear end. etc. But for the A6, if you don't want to watch the tach, the speeds are 40, 80, 120 & 160 and you won't exceed the redline. Easy to remember.

and your 40-80-120-160 shifting points would leave a lot on the table.

A6 with 2.56 gear

1st............50 MPH
2nd...........85 MPH
3rd..........131 MPH
4th..........175 MPH

A6 with 2.73 gear(Z51)

1st...........46 MPH
2nd..........80 MPH
3rd.........123 MPH
4th.........164 MPH

Instead of trying remember multiple speeds to shift at, just use the tach, and shift at 6500 in each gear. Only one number to remember...6500
