Default Trade in Value

I was looking at a C7 and the dealer wanted the MSRP price minus a trade in value of my Corvette at $9000 under Kelly Blue Book (trade in value). Had no issue with MSRP but $9000 under Kelly Blue Book trade in value I thought was low.

I was told they had all the C6 corvettes they wanted. Is this the norm for all the dealers with recent sales of the C7? I realize that a person is better off selling his corvette to a private party but is Kelly Blue Book that worthless for a trade in value of a C6 since dealers have an abundance of them?

Dunno if it's normal or not but I can tell you C6's have taken a serious hit in value as the market is becoming saturated with 'em.

I sold my C6 last November at Kelly value. 4 months later, that same car's value had dropped by $4K.

Good luck

I consider the dealer's offer extremely low. But I understand their offer if they have what they consider too many C6's on their lot.

Just sell it yourself. I have had very good success selling my past Corvettes myself.

Concentrating on the price of the new car or what they'll give you for a trade is a mistake. Decide what difference you're willing to pay; if they get there it doesn't matter how they do it. Don't get hung up on what your trade is worth, just negotiate the difference.

When I traded my '08 coupe 2 weeks ago they got very close to the difference I wanted to pay. At that point I said I'd sign if they'd throw in the "wing" spoiler and install, which is worth $1k or so. They agreed. On paper I paid just under MSRP for the C7 and they gave me $25k for my base 1LT '08 coupe with almost 50k miles.

As a point of comparison KBB says my C6 was worth over $27k. Edmunds says the exact same car is worth under $23k. Both can't be right, so don't put a lot of faith in what Kelly, Edmunds, or another site says your car is worth. Kelly is notoriously higher than what it's really worth.

The only mistake bigger than worrying about trade value instead of the difference is to buy based on payment amount.

I thought an offer I got was low at 6k below... BUT 9?! Wow, that's a new definition of greed!

I beat the trade by $10K. Don't trade it, sell it. Offered $25K trade, sold for $35K.

Default Try Carmax

Try Carmax & see what they offer. That way, you can haggle more with the dealer once you have a written offer.

You can look to see what Carmax is selling a similar car to yours for retail on there site and subtract about five grand and you will be close to wholesale on your trade.

That's one way that will put you in the ballpark, but a written quote is far superior and it only takes CarMax about 20 minutes to provide you with a quote. In my area CarMax always offered me more than a dealer. It's really infuriating when you take your car to the dealer from whom you purchased the car, and they offer you $3K+ less than CarMax.

Carmax is definately a good start. It gives you a price on paper that is good for 7 days. Then go to the local dealer get an appraisal from them and then compare the 2. Disadvantage of selling to carmax is if your state has sales tax credits and you sell to carmax you won't get that benefit and have to pay all the taxes unless you were buying another vehicle from them. If you trade in at the stealer i meant dealership you get what they are giving you plus here in NV for example 8.1 to go towards the sales tax of the vehicle your buying. You just need to be on your toes because they will trick you into thinking your getting more but your not.

Good luck

The problem is, too many people who had/have C6's getting into C7's.
There is probably a 2 year supply of C6's for sale.
For the OP, your dealers low offer is his way of saying - I don't want your used C6.

i showed up with a 2008 z51 red/black vert,,11,000 miles auto, i thought he would jump all over it untill i saw two red G.S. verts sitting for sale there already. he started at 30 and gave me 32 towards the c7, my old car has been sitting there now 2 and1/2 months at 37 grand. one of the G.S.'S. sits with it.

If the ease of the transaction along with the sales tax advantage isn't worthwhile, sell it yourself.

why not list it on here plus craigslist. I know selling privately is sometimes a pain in the *** but you will get significantly higher amount for it. Also don't know what state you live in but you will probably get tax savings... MSRP of c7 - trade in value = net to pay tax on

My car sold by being spotted on here. I advertised on E-Bay, Craig's List, Autotrader, News Paper, and on here.

I got ZIP from CL, Autotrader, newspaper. E-bay and here produced interest and inquiries.

Our sales tax is 7% so by my calculations to cover the extra sales tax, I only need to improve the value I recieve for my corvette by approximately $2000. I should do much better than $2000 above dealer trade in value by selling to a private party. Appears to be the only way to deal.

Actually I sold my c6z on here... I gave the buyer (who I am now friendly with) a sick deal on the car and still received a significant amount over trade.

That's one of the reasons I decided to order now rather than wait for 15s - Trade values are going to go through the floor as more and more people trade in their C-6s
