Oil change
I have this "Thing" about changing oil in new vehicles.
And, I have a trip planned next week.
So, with that said.
Would it be stupid to do an oil change at 400 miles?

With today's technology early oil changes are not necessary. The metal partials that were flowing around due to manufacturing process has virtually been eliminated. Many here will differ, there are quite a few who change the oil at 3000 miles. Follow the manufactures recommendations and you are good to go.

If it's what you want to do, do it. It won't hurt a thing.
I always do a break-in oil change - whether it's a new vehicle or an old vehicle with a new motor.

You're going to see probably a 50/50 split of people on here on this subject, but my take on it is that while it won't hurt anything to change it that early, it's simply not necessary at all and will not make your engine last any longer than if you waited a few more thousand miles. I do believe in following the oil life monitor (I did with my C5 and had 133,000 trouble free miles with that engine) however I also do not believe in taking the very first oil change right to the limit of the oil life monitor as well, as conditions aren't as ideal as they would be with a fully broken in engine. So for the first oil change, if it were my car, I would do it at 50% oil life, and then for the following ones I'd follow the monitor. Although because it's a hobby of mine, I would also get an oil analysis done just to make sure what I'm doing is safe (I did that with every oil change on my C5 and am now doing it with every oil change on my C6)

Its cheep insurance, if changing the oil before a trip gives you one less thing to worry about, do it.
There's nothing worse than spoiling a fun filled trip that a couple of dollars worth of oil would put you at ease, and let you worry about things that really need worring about. Is the wife comfortable, I wonder if that cop had his radar on, am I getting 29.6 mpg or 29.4, the wife is asleep and will she notice we're doing 150 mph.

I changed the factory oil and filter at 2800 miles. I cut open the filter to see if there was anything there. Nothing.
I then ran a magnet thru the residual oil at the bottom. Almost no iron particles and what was there was extremely fine. Very satisfied with what I found which was nothing.

If you are following the break in routine you haven't significantly loaded the engine yet. Leave the oil in for the trip, get on it once you're past 500 miles to help get the rings seated then change the oil when you get home.

I'm with you OP. I changed mine at 500 miles. Less than a hundred bucks for my own peace of mind. It may not matter at all but certainly won't hurt anything.
