Default Ride Qualtiy of Z51 vs Base

Is the Z51 a much stiffer/harder ride then the base suspension? I will using my C7 as a daily driver during the summer months. I want to get the most comfortable ride possible.

Has anyone test driven both and felt the difference?

Z51 with mag ride would probably be your best bet for most comfortable ride.

I have a non Z51 and the ride is really good. I hear that the best ride is with Z51 and mag ride set on touring mode. Again this is what I hear and have not driven a Z51 with or without mag ride.

There's lots of threads on this, and they agree that the non-Z51 has a more comfortable ride than the Z51 on the softest setting with magnetic ride control, primarily because of the lower profile tires on the Z51.

Thanks for the replies.. I was also considering the ZF1 package which includes the larger rims.. So I would have to assume with the base suspension that would still be a rougher ride w/ the 19/20's.. On my C6 I have the 18/19's and its a comfortable ride..

This is what a GM rep said about “softness:” Softest ride, None Z-51; next Z51 with Mag Shocks when set at Touring; next Z51 with Bilstein Shocks; next Mag Shocks set at Sport and stiffest Mag Shocks set at Track.
All Z-51’s, regardless of Mag Shocks or not, have stiffer springs, a larger front roll bar and a rear roll bar, which the base car does not have. You can soften up the Mag Shock but that does not overcome the stiffer springs, stiffer front and the addition of a rear roll bar. If you're on a washboard road perhaps it will be somewhat different. Would think the ZF1 would be close to the base suspension.

Thanks for the detailed info.. I think im going to just go NON-Z51 and get the ZF1 Package. I really don't goto the track but want the larger wheels plus I like the look of the Carbon Mirrors and Spoiler on the Artic White Coupes.. They seem to only offer the carbon mirrors on the Z51's and ZF'1...

Thanks again everyone..

the carbon flash mirrors & rear-spoiler are a stand-alone factory option ($100).

Hmm.. My dealer told me otherwise... I have to question them.. Even on Kerbecks site it says ZF1/Z51 only.. Its CODE TTV.. Am I missing something?

for 2014 it was stand-alone. Not sure if this hasn't changed for 2015...
Definitely check again; also look at the Order Guide.

EDIT: my error...for 2014 the TTV option was only available with Z51 (I originally read the order guide incorrectly).

because the Z51 and ZF1 come with full width rear spoilers it only makes sense that a non-Z wouldn't get that option.

The ride was better in the Z51 with the mag ride set to touring than in the Z51 without mag ride, but the noise level in either Z51 was significantly higher than the non-Z51s because of the larger wheels and lower profile tires. That's based on driving four C7s...base 2LT, base 3LT, Z51 3LT with MSRC, and Z51 3LT without MSRC.

So you would recommend the 18/19 wheels for a quiter ride? I didn't realize the wheel size affected the cabin noise but that makes sense.

Personally I would want the non Z 51 without the ZF1 option for the best ride.

The larger ZF1 wheels negate the ride quality of the non Z51. I believe if you are going to order the ZF1 option may as well get the Z51 with Mag ride for the best of all worlds. Otherwise stick with the non Z 51 and stock 19" tires. That is the way I am going. Very hard car to find used though. Many order the Z51 I think because it was such a good package on the C6.

We have the 3LT package with base Corvette and we bought it for a street cruiser. I changed out the run flat Michelins for the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's and the ride is great! Most comfortable riding Corvette I have ever ridden in. Low noise good street handling in all weather. I kept the run flats to put on it when we sell or trade it. The ride difference between the two is very noticeable. We carry a high end small 12 volt compressor and a Dynaplug kit in the event of a flat and a pressurized can of slime just in case nothing else works. If everything fails there is always Onstar. It's a great car and a lot of fun to drive. We have had it since November 2013 with no issues after 8,000 miles. For a street only driver the Z51 package can be replaced with a myriad of fun options!

How does the Z51 3LT without MSRC compare with the Z51 3LT with MSRC? Is the MSRC option worth the extra $1800 for the Z51?

I have a ZF1 package and the ride is great. Don't think the bigger wheels cause any issue. I am really impressed by this car and how it rides. I tell people it rides like a mid size Buick yet corners like a Porsche. It really is amazing how this generation has improved over previous generation 'Vettes.

My opinion is that the fun of feeling the entire ride and personality of the car change with the MSRC as you cycle through Tour, Sport and Track modes makes the MSRC well worth its cost.

FYI, I had MSRC on my 2006 and had no maintenance issues or replacement needs on the MSRC shocks over the 96,000 miles I owned it.

Bottom line--if you can afford the MSRC , buy it.
