Default OnStar Maintenance Tracker Oil Life

What's with On Star's oil life calculations? My 2014 Vet has 1100 miles on it since February and the oil life calculation seems to be very rapidly dropping monthly, significantly faster than any other car I have owned. Already at 52%. Anyone else noted a rapid drop?

If I am not mistaken. The Oil Life percentages will drop with time passed not just miles driven

It is not mileage-based. It's based on engine revs, temps, etc. but not mileage. So the life will deplete more rapidly for someone who makes frequent low-speed, short trips than for someone driving a distance on freeways. OnStar is getting that number from your car, which shoukd show you the same thing on the screen.

You're supposed to change your oil at least once a year .. it appears that even if you don't drive it, the indicated oil life will drop to zero over the course of a year ..

Just out of curiosity, why aren't you driving that car?

I had oil changed around Labor Day and I'm down to 92% as of today. My drive to work is in town 15 miles round trip.

Oil is the life's blood of the engine, keep it fresh and your engine will thank you. Why people drive until the OLM goes to zero, is ridiculous IMO. I change it once a year and that is usually around 40% on the OLM.

Because some of us love to become the second owner of a low mileage car.
