How many would rather have a C7 Z51 over a C6 ZR1?
#41
A guy near me recently (I think) traded a Callaway GS convertible for a white C7.
Nice as the C7 looks from most angles, if it was my money and truly an apples to apples buying choice between a base C7 and 638hp... I'm going 638hp.

I was driving in a nice part of town over the weekend with a friend of mine in my C7 Z51 and saw a very stunning red ZR1. I waved the whole time but I got no wave back though the ZR1 driver did eye my car heavily as I drove by. I don't think he liked how much better the C7 looked and how much younger I was IMO there's really no settling for less than a C7 now if you are looking to by a C4, C5, C6 or, C7. The C7 is such a big improvement over the previous years that it has made them really obselete in many ways.
For me, Corvettes are about performance. The C7 is nice, but is not enough and not even a consideration. So vs a base C7 I would do the ZR1 all day long, despite its shortcomings, which is mainly the lack of a targa option. Luckily for me, the C7 Z06 performs like the ZR1 and can be ordered exactly as I like, so that is what I have ordered. Either way, they're all Vettes and it's all good.
Save the Wave and drop the 'tude, dude

I guess I better get rid of my old piece of crap C6 that I have only had for a year.

Same here. I would rather own a base 1LT C7.. than an every option checked C6ZR1. Why? Because I already own a C6 and I have no use for essentially the same car, with a more powerful engine and bigger wheels/brakes. The interior & technology upgrades alone on the C7.. make it more attractive than ANY C6 in my opinion.
I understand some guys out there care more about ZR1's 638hp.. but the 400hp I already have my LS2 is more than enough power to accomplish anything I would dare do on a street or track. Do I even need mention living in the Washington, DC Metro area.. rarely are there times & areas where I could actually use 638hp? On the flip side, I could use the interior & technology upgrades of comforts of the C7 even if the car was stopped and sitting at a stoplight.

To each his own. While there are many things I like about the C7, the main purpose for my Corvette is a performance toy, not regular transportation. My car sees time on the roadcourse and dragstrip. Performance is my main concern, but still want it to be a street car that I can drive to work (sometimes), shows, or date night. The performace drop to a regular C7 would not be worth it just for the new styling and interior.

ZR1 is way cool...but I'm buying a 2015 Corvette. I want to cruse in the hill country and do a little run on the twisties. Don't need ***** to the wall power so I am going with style and todays tech.

The only prior generation Corvettes I would own at this point are a C1 or C2. Recently saw a ZR1 sitting on the used car showroom when getting my C7. It instantly reminded me of how outdated the C6 felt even in 2010. I respect the car for what it can do, but would never want to own one. If anything, a Z06 would be in my first.

While the OP was a little wild with his comments and some of the other posters replies with their extreme anger of opinions, I think it boiled down to the fact that we all have our favorites and just because we love it doesn't me the other guy who has the same logo on his car is going to feel the same about our choice. And obviously will not envy us for it either.
I look at it this way...
I'm 33 and have always dreamed of owning a corvette and when that time came I chose the C7 as it was what appealed to me. Could I have purchased a used ZR1? Yes, but that isn't what I wanted. Do I think the C6 ZR1 has awesome power and looks bad-***? Hell yeah I do! But it's not what I was having restless nights over. The C7 Z51 was my dream so I ordered one exactly how I wanted it and couldn't be happier. I don't expect anyone else to feel the same with my car unless that's what they desire. I don't assume other wise.
The choice between a C7 stingray and a C6 ZR1 isn't even worth the discussion as it's not comparable, one is old technology/design with high performance and the other is new technology/design with base performance (for a corvette). A comparable question would be a C7 Z06 to the C6 ZR1. The only reason anyone should be thinking of buying a C6 ZR1 at this time (over a C7 Z06) is if that body style appeals to you more so, which I can completely understand.

1. C7 has ugly camaro tail lights.
2. C7 Z06 has ugly spats and is slow.
3. Anyone that doesn't agree with us is an idiot.
Start there and you will be just fine

Dude take your logic and excellent points out of here. This is corvetteforum where we hate that kind of stuff. If you want to last here you better learn the following.

2. C7 Z06 has ugly spats and is slow.
3. Anyone that doesn't agree with us is an idiot.

I sold my last vette back around "97. I bought it new and owned it for around 9 years. The only reason I put an order in for a 2015 is because of the C7. My wife and I both agree that's it has a look all its own. I was going to buy a 2014 but we both wanted the A8. To me I don't like the look of the ZR1 hood. With that clear hood plastic over the engine every time I look at one I think I'm going to see Lennon's body on display.

I was faced with exact question posed by the OP. I ordered a 2014 Z51 Coupe in May of last year. When an opportunity came up to buy a low mileage ZR1 before my C7 was built, I chose the ZR1.
I will still own a C7 at some point, they are awesome cars with all the technological advancements we could ask for. However, the ZR1 was in no way "settling." It was the right choice for me.
As others have stated, I wouldn't read too much into not getting a wave returned. Most often, people just don't see you. My wife likes to laugh at me because, after 11+ years of owning Corvettes, I still wave at all other Corvettes and usually don't get a wave in return (regardless of generation).

The power of the LS9 is intoxicating. The new LT4 is supposed to be equal to the same, or slightly better...
The power characteristics of the LT1 is more correctly compared to the LS3.

I'm glad you like your ZR1 "and all your friends agree" but, to be honest, the comparison here is a bit bizarre. ZR1 vs C7 Z51? For even money - I guess I'd still have my c7 due to the upgrade in just about every arena other than horsepower. Having an outdated model is problematic to me, as I daily drive mine and I'd severely miss many of the "new car" updates.
Past that, I'd rather have a C7 Z06 then a C6 ZR1.
I guess that, for me, I recognize the "cool factor" of a C6 ZR1 because I know what it has under the hood. But I have no real desire to own one, and would rather have the middling version of the next model.

I love these posts. From two guys with C6's in their avatars - - one of them notorious for poo-poo'ing the C7.
Again, very happy for you that you love your C6's, but to a few of us, you're driving yesterday's block-shaped dinosaur.
To each his own.
