Default Battery Maintainer - winter storage

when hooking up the battery maintainer, does one leave the trunk "open" or close it on the wire?

I just set up mine .. opting to keep the charger outside the trunk and closing the trunk on the wire that goes from the charger to the cigarette lighter... but I'm concerned about damaging the wire.

You're fine either way. If you're going to cover the car, I'd just leave the trunk lid lowered but not latched. The trunk and dash lights will turn off in 10 minutes.

If it concerns you, then just half-latch the lid. It closes snugly enough to keep bugs and other vermin out, but not so tightly as to crimp the wire.

If you push the wire up towards the top of the car the gap seems a little wider, just behind the side window.

Lower toward the rear it pinches the wire, higher it seems not to do it as much.

Thanks to all for the advice .. very helpful. next I plan to put steel wool in the tail pipes and scented dryer sheets in the engine compartment and in the cabin in order to discourage mice.

Why not just set a few traps near the car?

I'm more comfortable with the "belt and suspenders" approach to mice.
